Oliver is a little over 3 months - he's been with me a bit over two weeks.

At the two week mark I wanted to change his food.
We are switching from Royal Canin mini puppy - to Orijen puppy.
We didn't switch cold turkey, but father I mixed the orijen w the RC kibble.
Maybe I mixed too much?

It's about 65/70% RC & 30/35% Orijen.
He's been eating that since Thursday.

Yesterday he had hist first diarrhea.
For the most part he always had soft BM's - but this was full blown diarrhea.
In the last two weeks I've always tried pumpkin to harden up his stool, but it doesn't really work for us.

Also today's stool looked a bit mucus-y
We have an appt at the vet and are bring a stool sample.

My question is - when changing foods, is diarrhea normal?
Like is it his body just adjusting to it?
Or does diarrhea mean he can't take the food?

Thanks in advance for all the great insight I'm sure to receive!

Thanks , will do.

Regarding the probiotic - is that different than the Greek yogurt we bought? What probiotic would you suggest we buy? So feed him the yogurt & probiotic together??

There are lots of discussions about giardia on DK but the important things to know are.....

It is highly contagious and your pup can get reinfected if you do not clean up after each poop!!  You need to use a bleach solution to kill the bacteria!

Make sure you get Panacure and not the other antibiotic...Metro!!

Get a good probiotic and make sure it is given to your pup at least 2 hours before or after the antibiotic.

Keep giving him the yogurt (same time frame as the probiotic).

Most important....do freak out because most new puppies get giardia and if you take care of it properly everything will be just fine!

I am sure others will give you advice as well.  Good luck and give little Oliver a big Doodle Hug!

Oh...I forgot to tell you to politely refuse any prescription foods the vet tells you to buy!  More about that later!

You can even pick up his poop by using a paper plate cut in half. Once you notice that he's getting ready to "go", just slide the plate under him.
Also, make sure to wipe his paws and butt. Find out if your vet carries proviable..(there's a junky purina brand that some vets also carry, but same as the rx foods, garbage, don't buy it) If not, order it today, and you'll have it in a few days. Good luck! You will get through this. It is a process, but you'll be fine. They will want to retest his fecal in a few weeks.
