Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello everyone! I'm new to this board and wanted to say hello! I just got an adorable F1B goldendoodle last week. Shes adorable and a sweetheart. Other then having a few housebreaking problems everything is going great! Wanted to ask some advice. I have a fenced in backyard and let her go out without a leash to go potty. When she has to go she goes right away. She loves being outside so I sit out with her in the yard during the day while she plays. Do you think it will confuse her housebreaking by letting her play outside instead of just being out there when she has to go potty?

Piper is so cute! I just recently brought home my puppy as well. I don't have any advice on the backyard situation as we don't have one, but good luck!! Enjoy her! :)

Hi Lauren ~ Piper is so darn cute.  I don't thing It hinders potty training at all.  When you do take her outside to specifically go potty, be sure to praise her like there is no tomorrow.  Puppies really aim to please.  BTW - Welcome to Doodle Kisses!  When you get a chance be sure to check out the groups section on the main page and join as many as you like.

Congrats on that cute puppy!

I don't have any advice as Trav goes in and out all day long, and I don't know ahead of time if he really has to go or if he just wants to check out the neighborhood.  :)

Piper is absolutely adorable...and a big, warm welcome to DK!  Puppies need to expend their endless energy and since she hasn't had all her shots yet, it is really your only safe option:)

Piper is a cutie!  I don't see a problem.  I used to walk Quincy over to a "dedicated" area and encourage him to go, which has worked fine.  Once he was done, he was free to explore, sniff and do his dog thing.  Now he knows the drill and I can tell by how quickly he runs out whether he has to go or if he is just going out to see what's interesting.

She is beautiful!!! Congrats!!

We don't have a backyard but I think the designated "potty area" seems like a great idea, friends of ours do that. You could always do what Lori said- take her into the yard on a leash to the designated area and say "go potty" or whatever your saying is. Once she is done, reward her with a treat (if you choose), and then let her roam around and play once she's done her business. I would suggest getting her used to being on a leash with you though, as she gets older it may get harder and harder to get her to walk and focus on a leash if she's used to being off one. We didn't use a leash with Daisy for the first week or so and then she hated the leash once we introduced it. She is fine now but it took several weeks for her to be okay with it on!

Welcome to DK. Of course it is fine to let your pup enjoy the yard just for fun too.

So cute!!!

 We do allow Hoka unleashed to both play outside and to "go pee" which is his potty command in our fenced yard unleashed.  He has been very good about his training.  At times if I really want to make sure he goes potty, I leash him until he does his business then let him off leash to play.  He rings bells to go outside now after having him about 4.5 weeks, both to potty and sometimes to play.

I let my dogs play in the backyard when they were puppies.  To me that is what a backyard is for - beside potty needs.  :-}

Thank you everyone for your replies! So glad I found this forum! Piper is doing great with her crate training but does sometimes have mistakes in the house from time to time. How long did it take for your doodles to be
be completely housebroken? When I was researching goldendoodles I almost changed my mind about getting one because there was so much online about them being hyper and crazy dogs lol. I found this forum and after reading through the posts here I decided to get one after all. I am so glad I did! Piper is playful but not at all hyper. She is very laid back and sweet and my grandbaby adores her!

Welcome!  Piper is adorable and it's fine to let her out to enjoy the yard.  Puppies need to develop, play, and enjoy their world.

Agreed! As soon as she finishes pottying.....praise the heck out of her, and then let her run and explore.
As far as being housebroken.....30 days without an accident is usually the rule of thumb, in being considered housebroken. Somewhere around 5-6 months when they hit that 30 day mark. LOL...can't begin to tell you how many times we reset that clock! ;)
