I'm so upset. Just took Bogey to be groomed (new groomer). He told me his ears are so matted they are going to have to be shaved. I thought I had been doing good combing them out but apparently I had been combing over the matted hair and just combing the top hair. He said golden doodles need to be combed every time their hair gets wet or it mattes. I usually comb him a couple times a week, guess that's not enough. I'm really afraid to see him when I pick him up.

He looks great!

Thank you for sharing

Trav's ears got matted, on the underside, near the end.  The mats were down to the skin and I just couldn't get them out!  That was before I had clippers.  A groomer 'scooped' the mats, and I was so grateful!

Hi, I found a wonderful product called Vetrolin that I use on my Doodles. I have used it on my horses tails for years, & it has gotten rid of the worse tangles & knots I have come across. It does take a little work but they will come out. You can find this product at feed stores or online.

Gail - Is it possible he is going through the coat change and that is why he got so matted?  I thought I read where he was about 12 mos.  One of the best videos I watched was learning how to line brush and the appropriate pressure to use.  There really need to brushed regularly unless you intend to keep them super short.  Those with beautiful doodle coats are not low maintenance - that is for sure. Good luck.

I have to comb BOTH sides of Ned's ears and make sure I get all the way from the bottom of the ear flap.  I love my groomer and she does a pretty good job, but I find that Ned is matting more again (maybe going through a 'senior' coat change :-}) and I have to work on mats that are in the middle of his ears, neck and shoulders every other day again - just like when he was a pup.
