DH and I began "juicing" a couple of months ago.    The result is LOTS of pulp.    I am looking forward to spring and starting a fabulous compost pile, but until then I've been tossing the pulp away.   It seems so wasteful, but I'm not into making bread or crackers with it.    I read last night that some dogs love the pulp left from the juicer.     This morning I tossed some in his bowl and he gobbled it right up and was looking for more.    Today's batch was kale, carrots, celery and apple.    So, my question is......how much is ok to give him on a daily basis?

It's fat free and contains almost no calories at all, since it's mostly indigestible plant fiber. Watch his stools. Some extra fiber each day can be beneficial, but too much can cause diarrhea.

Thanks Karen.   I'd like to think he's getting the benefit of the juices not extracted as well.

I have no idea how much is ok.  But your mention of pulp reminded me of a funny Halas story.  If I'm eating grapefruit, I'll give him a small bite.  The first time I did it, my mom took him for his lunchtime walk the next day.  She called me in a panic about the very odd-shaped things in his poop.  Parasite? Some weird bug?  What could it be?  We even took a stool sample to the vet.  It came back normal.  Shortly before the vet called back to tell me that, it dawned on me what it was.  It was the tiny little pulp-like pieces of the grapefruit.  I guess they went right through him.

LOL! Indigestible plant cellulose will do that!

OMD Leslie.....that is so funny!!!!    I'm sure I would have been concerned seeing  something like that too!

Who knows? I would start low and see. Maybe a quarter of a cup and see if you notice any problems?
