Susan, I saw on FB that people recommended 4 Health to you and I have to urge you to keep food questions off of FB, like I mentioned. Most people on FB just recommend food that has worked for their animals but not what is nutrionally sound or that has good sourcing and manufacturing. I promise your best bet is to listen to us here in the food group. Also while I am at it, Coconut Oil has no health benefit when used internally... Also when they tell you they have good ratings from DFA it really does not mean anything. That site is as good as comparing bags in the store.. Do not even get us started on the Pro Plan they suggested!!
Amen.
Also not to beat a dead horse but the people on FB who say you SHOULD/HAVE to feed a grain free diet or it is not a good food (paraphrasing here) and such do not know what they are talking about. There are foods on our recommended list that have grains, but it is the type of grain that is important. Fromm for example has both grain free and healthy grains and as long as they are healthy grains and not fillers you are okay...long story short, stick to our list and you will be good to go.
ok so your the Britney that reached out to me on the golden doodle site? your refering to groomer liz and her comments..lol yes i understand what you are saying here and i really appreciate you letting me know this because my husband did actually want us to try 4 health but i stuck with what i had read here and felt it was the most solid place to get correct info. Britney did you design the food list? how do you and others come up with the list of recommended foods?
That would be me. :)
This group goes back 6 years, and there is a long history of how the recommended brands list evolved. Actually, the real start of it was the massive pet food recalls of 2007, in which thousands of pets died or were made permanently ill from melamine imported from China through third party food brokers who were employed by the major pet food companies. That was what changed the pet food industry and inspired some of us to start researching canine nutrition, dog foods, and all of the other issues we discuss here. My own educational background is in human physiology and nutrition.
The brands we recommend are researched on several levels. Some of the things we look at are where their ingredients are sourced, and that they are not owned by multinational corporations (known to use outsourcing for purchasing). We look at the recall history, the ethics and reliability of the company. We look at the foods themselves, the ingredients, the nutrient percentages and balance, whether or not they use artificial colorings or preservatives, synthetic vitamins, or other additives that are known to be potentially harmful in any of their products. If a company makes one line that contains wholesome ingredients and other lines that contain bad ingredients, we do not include that company. We look at marketing, too. There are some brands I just cannot recommend based on the outrageous and ridiculous claims in their advertising. There is just too much misinformation out there about diet and nutrition, so my goal is for this group to present only accurate, reliable and factual information.
that is so incredibly sad! how heart breaking for those people who lost their pets!! people are so greedy and sick!
I had friends who lost dogs because of it.
But somehow, many pet owners still are unaware of what happened in 2007, even though it was huge international news. Two executives at a Chinese food company were executed by the government. Best selling books were published about it. Dozens of new privately owned pet food companies making "natural" foods, and all of the new "boutique type" pet supplies stores that only sell foods made in North America came into being. Bloggers like Susan Thixton started websites and email newsletter to keep people informed on how to make better food choices, as well as the Dog Food Advisor, which came after the Dog Food Analysis site (we used that one quite a bit in the early days.) And yet, the recent Chinese chicken jerky debacles took so many pet owners by surprise. On FB, the people were just shocked about it. Part of the reason for this group is to make people aware before they lose a beloved pet.
Hmmm, I posted a comment here but it's gone. ?? Are comments deleted here if they go contrary to someone else's opinion?
No, nothing gets deleted. It must be a gremlin in the works.
:)
This has happened to me before Rose, just a glitch in the system sometimes I think
