Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
So, we know there both two young yet, but they don't act it (humpin little buggers, espcially Louie!)
Because of there gorgeous coats, unique colours and amazing personalities we was thinking of studding Louie & Dougal later on.
Does anyone know what age they have to be to be able to stud them?
Also, the main reason is because we really want another puppy, but my mum said she will only get one if Louie & Dougal stud, and the puppy is extra cute (which it will be) and it'll be a fun, different experience as we've never studded a dog or anything before.
Thanks for your help :)

Also, could you explain what the stud would be like to live with as you mentioned?
I've never lived with one myself, but from what I understand they CAN be quite a handful. Some common problems are increased aggression (because of the extra testosterone) and a lot of marking behavior (even inside the house).
It's not something I would undertake myself - seems like a lot of work for very little reward since you wouldn't even have the joy of raising the puppies yourself.
Thanks, Julie. "Clever-clogs" -- That's a new one to me. It kind of has a nice ring to it, even if it was meant in a mocking and name-calling way.
Here are some more links that may help you decide, give you information on the health of these dogs ( in general ), and some information on genetic issues that are common. I found these very helpful. I use these as a guide myself. Hope this helps you too

If you are around here long enough, you might see a barrage of poorly bred dogs. We tend to become saddened and even overwhelmed as post after post of bad news is displayed across the front page. So so many problems. All could have been prevented by health testing. I for one, had a two year old doodle, who was the love of my life, pass in my arms because of poor breeding. Understand our passion. I hope we can help you understand and use this information to help you make informed and responsible decisions. Peace
I ask myself everyday why this had to happen to my two year old dog?
I think the point of this is... all of this can be prevented by the breeder. The pain and suffering of the dog, the grief and suffering of the owners :(
Beautiful Starlit. We shared tears with you Joanne. RIP beautiful girl.
I did not know (or remember) that. I knew she was your "heartdog" and you miss her dearly. Give Spud an extra hug for me. Let the good memories linger and put the rest behind you. I have wonderful memories of my two big doodles, but it could have been something in their breeding also. They both died at seven years but were not at all related. Groucho's breeder is very responsible and I will probably get one of her sheepadoodles in the future. She has not even bred the dogs yet but has her dames and sires for her sheepadoodles. It takes a long time to get all the things lined up before breeding. Hondo (my heartdog) was from a back-yard breeder when I really did not know better. Yes, there is so much that can happen and we want to minimize the risk to our wonderful pets.
Joanne - I've only been on DK for a year so did not know about Starlit. However, after I saw this I found your post to Starlit and just read it. It is a beautiful tribute - I am so so sorry you lost her, I'm sure it's still not easy. She is a beautiful girl. :(
what happened to Starlit.. so sorry :(
Starlit was a badly bred dog. Too many issues to list.
I placed this here to bring a face to the argument that breeding should never be taken lightly. She is just one of many dogs. She was mine. They can have a great personality, a beautiful coat, etc... but you dont breed them just for those reasons
I would not even consider it. Humping is pretty normal behavior for dogs and is a sign of seeking dominance. I usually have male dogs and have them neutered as soon as possible. It is no fun dealing with breeding your pets and should not be done no matter how cute they are. Tell your mom that if she wants a cute puppy she can get one just as cute as your guys from a breeder, and make sure you select your breeder carefully. You do not want to encourage back-yard breeding or puppy mills.
