Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I'm having a hard time understanding the genetic terminology for doodles. Can anyone help me figure it out? Bijou's mom was a goldendoodle (from a white standard poodle and a golden retriever); Bijou's dad is a labradoodle (from a chocolate lab and a black poodle). So is Bijou considered F2? Or is there a different genetic term for golden labradoodles?

It doesn't really matter, we are happy to have her regardless, but I'd like to be able to know how to describe these mixes to other people who ask me about her.  So far we've gotten a lot of "why isn't she gold if she's a doodle" questions.

Thanks for any help you have.

Bijou is a "double doodle"; that's how most breeders advertise them although some breeders call them North American Retrievers, or NAR. I guess you could say her generation (not "genetic code", the generational terms (F1, F2B, multi-gen, etc) are really not about genetics but rather generations) is F2, as that's what you would call puppies from two F1 labradoodles or two F1 Goldendoodles.

Thanks Karen!  The breeder called them "golden labradoodle", F2... but I wondered if there was something different code since she isn't the pup of two goldendoodles or labradoodles.  Thanks for the distinction between genetic code and generation... several sites I researched on were calling it genetic code, but I now I realize it was because they were also explaining why some dogs are more or less likely to shed due to what gene's get passed down.

Honestly, I have never heard anyone call a double doodle a "golden labradoodle".

The "F" in the generations stands for "filial", which just means offspring, basically. The generational designations are definitely not anything to do with genetics. Basically, they are not "official", either, since doodles are not a breed, so there is no official breed standard, and the definitions can vary.

I wouldn't bother trying to explain the generation to people who ask about her. They wouldn't know what those terms mean anyway. They are really only interested in what her breed mix is, so you can simply say the breeds without complicating things with F2, etc. Clearly, anyone who asks why she isn't golden if she's a doodle would have no idea what you were talking about anyway. :)

Yes, suddenly the bandanna's I saw that said "I'm a doodle, what are you" make so much more sense to me.

Yeah, a double doodle would be an F1 double doodle - since it's the first generation double doodle.

The only way you'd get an F2 double doodle is if you mated two double doodles together.  Their offspring would be F2.

I have no answers for you, but she is ONE adorable Doodle and makes me smile!  This picture is so sweet!

I think she is an F! double doodle. Color genetics in doodles are quite complicated with any number of genes, probably some unknown, affecting the more basic color combos partially or fully.

She looks so sweet!!!

I don't know anything either, but she is one sweet little doodle whatever her genetic code is. :)

Bijou is a very adorable. I agree w/ Karen and F, I have only heard that mix as a double doodle, not a golden labradoodle.

Golden labradoodle sounds like the best definition to me.  I thought double doodles were a labradoodle mixed with a goldendoodle - both great breeds.  Doesn't matter much, but golden labradoodle sounds good to me.

I would just call her cute! Love that face and those sweet soulful eyes.
