We recently moved to Miami from Washington DC where the vet has recommended that we switch the protocol for our aussiedoodle from our regular monthly dosis of heartworm medication and monthly dosis of topical flea and tick prevention to trifexis and a tick collar.   This seems to be standard in the area.  I have read some alarming reports on trifexis causing death in limited cases.  I discussed it with my vet and she says that trifexsis would not be recommended for a dog that had any history of seizures as it seems to exacerbate something.  Before we switch over to trifexis I would love to know what you all know or think about the medication and it's use on doodles.  I'm a little freaked by the report on it causing death in dogs.  Thanks.

I can only speak from experience. Enzo has been on Trifexis since the start. Has never had any type of reaction. A huge tip is giving the medication on a full stomach.

PS...if you are worried about ticks...Trifexis can be given with Frontline Plus. Can be used together since the meds are given differently. One topically, the other orally.

Our vet recommended Trifexis but so far we have stuck with Heartguard and Frontline, we live in central Florida and that combo seems to work good for fleas and ticks. I'm resistant to giving drugs to the pups but know its necessary especially in our area where fleas and ticks are a problem all year long. Also, Madiba is just adorable!!

There is a new beef flavored chew called Nexgard that I am starting to research that is for fleas and ticks (American deer ticks). Comfortis is just for fleas. Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone else who wants to research it too. I don't like tick collars and I don't like the topicals. I give heart guard plus and this might be a good option for the fleas and ticks! If anyone knows anything negative please respond!

My Shelby has been on Trifexis for a couple of years now.... No issues with it what so ever. I am very happy we don't have to do the flea topical any longer :)

My vet also suggested Trifexis - I'm still wary.  My previous vet was as ambivalent as I am regarding it.   It sounds good, but I'm a total coward when it comes to new/improved or latest/greatest. 

We are using Frontline here, but I have not addressed the issue of heartworm as it is negligible here and I know is a seesaw situation.

I will ask or offer this tidbit - since Madiba is part Aussie, have you tested her for the MDR1 gene? She may or may not be predisposed against certain meds, such as ivermectin - thus limiting options.  There are options, but it's a consideration.

My dogs were switched from Sentinel to Trifexis when Sentinel wasn't available.  Neither had any sort of reaction.  The only thing I noticed is Trifexis smells like pesticide.  It was difficult to hide the pill in their food.  I never had that trouble with Sentinel.  What I prefer is that Trifexis actually kills fleas; Sentinel sterilizes female fleas (although we have never had fleas so I have no experience with the effectiveness).

My goldendoodle has been on Trifexis for about a year now with no adverse affects.  Some dogs don't do well on it though...   What I didn't realize is that it doesn't protect her from ticks.  Our vet gave us a tick collar (Preventic) on Friday.   Thursday night, Luna had a tick on the top of her head.  I was so freaked out.   To be honest, I hate "medicinal collars".   It scares me and reading the material that came with it - it says its very dangerous to humans and cats.  It recommends a 15 minute hand washing if you handle the collar.......  and I'm supposed to leave this on my dog's neck.   They told me the preventic collar was my only option since she was taking trifexis, which I'm reading is not really the case.   I wish i wasn't stuck in a contract with Banfield until next March otherwise I would be looking for a new vet.
