Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Thanks everyone who joined Adina & I for the live dog training webinar!  A very special thanks to our trainer Doggy Dan for sharing so much good stuff.  Adina is off to put the kids to bed so I'll wrap this up.

What did you think?

Again, thank you!  We know it's not easy to free up an evening on a holiday weekend.  :-)

We're sorry we couldn't address every question you guys asked in chat.  You had some great questions and we just couldn't get to them all.

What I really like about Dan since getting to know him is that NOTHING is off limits.  He doesn't hold anything back and say "You have to subscribe to my website to get that answer."  Nope.  He will give you the best answer he possibly can every time.  And tonight he laid out his method.  As you saw, he is passionate about the transformations that take place in our dogs when WE are the pack leaders.  He has shown that the basis of solving every problem is being the pack leader and the trusting relationship with our dogs that comes from that.

I thought the content was killer.  The production values?  Not so much.  But I really don't care too much that Adina and I were in our garage (really!) and Dan was in his spare bedroom.  This was about answering your questions and giving you as much value as we possibly could.  I think we did that in spades.  Could we cover everything in an hour?  Nope.

And that's why Dan's video site is so helpful.  You can try it out for $1 and watch over 250 videos on all aspects of dog training.  Dan is a full time trainer and has run across most every problem you can imagine.  The best part is he has taped his interaction with these dogs and given us the solution to solve them for ourselves.

So check out his website.  He has given DK members a $1 trial and then $10 off.  This offer is only good until Wednesday night.  Thanks Dan!

Really? Let's hear it!!  I found it really empowering because I have been so frustrated with this particular situation  and had tried so many things to resolve it with no success.  His technique was so simple and worked so quickly. :)

Next, I plan to implement the measures to control barking at the window. I already get up and look and tell her it's "okay" which works well with everyone except the UPS and FedEX delivery people. I haven't tried step three which is the separation technique.  Can't wait for my next delivery now! LOL

Please share the tip with me! I've been so busy with my mother in law coming that I completely missed the webinar. I need to know the tip for barking at everybody who walks past.

Deb, instead of yelling at them to be quiet, just walk over to the window or door (or wherever they are directing their barking) Take a look outside and then look at the dog and say "thank you" and walk away. It really does work! Its like they just want to tell you about whatever danger they saw. They want to make sure you know about it and if you actually go and look and let them know its no big deal, they will settle down.

this is a different technique then what Ricki and I were discussing, but also a good one.

Thank you. I've been doing something similar. I'll just have to stick with it and tweet it a bit. Yarrow does all her barking outside and she does look back to see if I'm coming, like she wants me to come and see what she's barking at. I walk over to her very calmly and tell her, 'that's enough' but I don't think it's working. From now on I'll try, 'thank you, Yarrow'.

If she's barking at the fence, try walking over to where she is and placing both your hands on the fence when you say thank you. It's called "reclaiming the fence" and it's worked wonders for me and for a few other people I know. At first, JD would try to move to another area, so I'd just calmly follow him and "claim" that part of the fence, too. He now gives up the first time. :)

Thank you. We had a nature-friendly, wildlife-proof fence built late last fall. I think that because Yarrow can see everything she thinks she has to sound the alarm at everyone and everything. Nothing escapes her eyes, ears or nose. Some dog walkers have started stopping to say hello and try to befriend her. The main trailhead is just to the left of our fence.

I know how you feel. We're on the corner of a tiny street which dead-ends at a path into the adjoining subdivision, and we have a steady stream of people, dogs, strollers, bikes, etc. going right by the fence all day & evening.

If "thank you" doesn't work twice in a row for the same barking situation, put the dog in time out. Chance had two time outs today :)

How long is an effective time out?

For me it's as long as it takes for them to calm down.  So I open the door and check their body language....calm means out.  If they then escalate immediately they go right back in.  With Murph if he was at a level 10 when he went in which usually means there's another dog right in our yard and he doesn't respond when I "check out the situation" and tell him "okay" (I've always used that instead of thank you, but it's in the same calm tone), it takes about 10 minutes and often the first time out he'll run back to see if the dog is gone....then it's another time out and that one usually only takes a few minutes.  That's all it takes....he then gives up and the dog is usually gone anyway.

Lori, remember this when you are doodle sitting for me this week LOL
