We bought our one year old, Leisel, a dog house for Christmas. I think it is the greatest thing ever, but she is reluctant about going all the way in. I've tried putting trats in the far corners, but she stretches as far as she can, gets the treat without entering the house completely, then slinks off to chew it up! Any advice on how to encourage her to use it? I thoug tabout slathering the walls with peanut butter so she would stand in there, licking it off....
She loves to be outside and is out there quite a bit, playing and chewing toys in the yard. She actually prefers to be out, and as long as it is nice she'll ask to go out even when she doesn't have to potty. She loves her crate, so I thought that she'd also like the house.
I had a dog that never went into her doghouse. We got it so she would have a place of her own if she wanted it. She was never left out for any lengthy time and never when we were gone. I finally gave the doghouse to my neighbor whose dog loves it...
We bought it for her so that if I have to leave her home for a few hours, she'd have a place to go if it rained, got too sunny, cold, etc. She's an inside dog, but I thought it would be a nice alternative to her crate. She loves to "talk" to the neighbor dogs through the fence and plays with her toys out there. We tried putting her bed in there tonight and she was not impressed. I might just break out the peanut butter this week and also put her food bowl in there sometime and see what happens!
Do you happen to have a garage with side door? Our greyhound loves being outdoors ( well when she was younger) and wouldnt want to come in when we had to run to the store etc so we would leave the side garage door open so she could hang in there where it was cool etc. Maybe look into one of those cabana type things for dogs or building a type of pagoda or hut?. Lincoln likes open air. I know if he was out for long by himself i would think he would probably choose the deck in the shade over being IN something.
Koda is the biggest chicken ever and if I got him a dog house I think it would take him a while before he would be secure enough with it to actually use it. Anything new in the yard or anywhere for that matter freaks him out. Haha. Maybe that has something to do with why your dog won't use it.....maybe she has to get herself acquainted with it first before she trusts it.
Maybe make it a fun thing for her, like a game, to go in it. I'm not entirely sure how to do that though - it's late and my creative juices don't flow at this hour lol. Maybe give her new toys or treats when she goes in the house so she associates the dog house with good things.
Leisel is also a big chicken...I have her food bowl in there and I think I'll feed her in there for a few days. Last night I tried putting bacon in there, but she's so long and skinny, she just stretched herself out and licked up the bacon and ran away with it. She also is obsessed with a certain kind of hand lotion that I wear so I'm thinking of smearing a little lotion inside so it smells like me. I'm sure it isn't the healthiest choice, licking hand lotion, but she licks it off my hands every day so she's licking it either way! LOL
Thanks, and I will say that she ate two meals in there today, so we're making progress! She still had her tail hanging out, but she was basically in there!
