Anyone done this with their pup? We are going away for a week at the end of July and it is a no pets allowed vacation. I am considering having Ollie do some training while we are gone. I found a reccomended place that does as follows: trainer meets with us at our house for an hour and talks about what we are hoping to accomplish board training Ollie, Ollie goes to live with trainer (and up to 4 other client dogs) at her house for 10 days. When we get back, trainer brings Ollie back and spends an hour with us going over techniques etc. . . We have three young kids and both work fulltime so training time is sparse so this seems like a good idea. Thoughts? PS - the trainer is also willing to board our older dog so they can stay together which is good

The going rate for board and training in the LA area is about $1000 a week, so don't feel too bad. If you can afford it, I think it is a great investment. It will definitely give you a jump start on training your puppy. To protect that investment, you are going to need to spend a minimum of 20 minutes once a day or better 15 minutes twice a day on formal leash training. A once a week class from the same trainer will help to motivate you to keep it up. This is in addition to the normal continual training you do all day long in training a puppy. Taking him out to potty and staying with him, making him sit to get a treat, down for a belly rub, etc. Honestly, a small amount of time now will protect your investment and reap you lots of divends around 6 or 8 months. Go for it.
How true it is in LA. I was going to board/train Archie but it was $130 a day. Alas, my sister will stay at my house for 3 nights. No training, but he gets the comfort of his own home. Where are you in LA. I am in Studio City.Audrey
I know a trainer that charges <$2000 for 10 WEEKS worth of board & train where the dog is FULLY trained to off leash reliability. He lives in California...so to hear $1000 for 10 days sounds outrageous to me.

I live in Arcadia - the San Gabriel valley, east of Pasadena.

Adrienne where is this person in California? I presume somewhere in central or very northern California. Around here, it would be $3000 just to board a dog in a cage for 10 weeks!
Fortunately, my children and their friends live near and so far one of them has always been available to house and dog sit - for a refrigerator stocked with food. No training though, but lots of playing and spoiling.
It is Central Ca Maryann. I know a similar trainer in MD who does the same thing for probably less $$. They both give excellent results.
For 6 weeks of training our vet's office charges $75.00, for boarding, they charge something like $55.00 per day. I have never found a trainer offering these services, although I do know that our trainer does dog sit. We live in the Minneapolis area.

We were thinking of doing this too with our little counter surfer.  But boarding here is at a minimum of about 50-60- but we have paid as much as $75 to get crate free - so including training it is fairly pricey.
