To those of you who trim your doodles nails, do you have a brand clipper you really like?
I use the Safari brand and it works. It just seems like maybe not the best. Yogi allows me to clip with no trouble, but he kind of jerks after each clip. I wonder if the clipper isn't that great or if it's just a reflex. So I'm considering a different pair if there are some good ones out there. Like I said, this one works, just not sure if it's just an "ok" pair that gets the job done.

I think Safari is a good brand. I've never used their nail clippers but I have a few other Safari tools and really like their quality. I have a JW Softgrip Guillotine style clipper that I like, but have nothing to compare it to. The cut itself is a pretty sharp and quiet one. The sound of the nail being clipped can be an issue for some dogs. I just wish there were a clipper that could detect the quick, as I've hit it a couple times on the doods. I always keep styptic powder close by to quickly dip the nail into to stop the bleeding. Most of my doods' nails are black so its really a guess as to where the quick is. I use a flashlight to do my best to find them, and usually I avoid them, but accidents do happen. Cutting nails is probably my least favorite part of dog grooming.

Thank you Debb.
I'm with you, it's my least favorite part too, Yogi would probably agree with us. Some of his claws are clear and some black. I understand how you hate trimming the dark ones. It is a guess. I hit his quick for the first time a few weeks ago. Made me feel bad, but it didn't seem to bother him.

Safari nail clippers are fine. I've used them in the past, although I have a JW right now (for when I'm feeling too lazy to use the Dremel). I definitely prefer the guillotine style to the scissor style, mainly because you can replace the blade when it starts to dull. Using a dull blade pinches the nail and that can be uncomfortable.

The flinching is normal and can be caused by the unusual sound or feeling, or just because some dogs (looking at Lachlan here) have dainty little ticklish tootsies and feel this overwhelming urge to check and make sure you haven't amputated anything important. *grin*

Haha Jen about Lachlan! You mention the dull blade, I guess that is what it seems like, but the clippers were new when we started using them in November.
