Planning on a road trip from NYC to Montreal w/ Oliver this weekend - need some adivce :)

Hey Everyone,

We're planning our first road trip /  vacation with Oliver this weekend.

- Can anyone recommend any really nice pet friendly hotels in or around Old Montreal?

- Nice puppy friendly things to do?

- Also, any advice or things I may forget regarding Oliver and his really long car ride? (he does well in them, and has yet to be car sick)

- And all I need to get across the border both ways is just his rabies papers?

Thanks in advance everyone!

I can't help you with the things once you get there, but have taken several long car trips with mine.  I would check with your Vet on the required papers needed.  We needed a health certificate (apparently by law, which I never knew about) to just travel from state to state.  Also I would make sure you have good identification on the collar that is good and secure so it can't come off.  Include the cell number since you won't be home.  Keep the food and water in a handy location when you pack the car so you can get to it on the road.  I feed light before we leave home and then offer small snacks along the way rather than having the tummy too full.  I harness mine in the back seat so they are secure in the event of an accident.  I want to be sure if I am incapacitated that they don't escape when someone opens the door.  I also keep papers in my purse and my glove box that give instructions for the dogs in the event of an accident as far as authorizing any care they need and who to call to get them if I am unable.  When booking my hotel room I ask for the 1st floor at the far end of the hallway if possible so that I don't have people walking and talking past my door all night so as to limit the barking.  I'm not sure if they are good in Canada or not, but I use dogfriendly.com or bringfido.com to scout out the places that I'm going to visit for dog friendly places.  That's all I can think of at the moment other than enjoy your trip.  Love traveling with our girls.

I don't have any area specific recommendations as we haven't had our dogs with us when we visited that area.

When we crossed into Canada (2 weeks ago) we had to have health certificates issued within 30 days in addition to the proof of rabies. Also, if you are taking dog food it must be in the original packaging in order to cross back into the US.

Good luck! We take road trips w/ our 3 regularly and always have a good time. We explore more since we stop often for potty breaks and to let the dogs get exercise and stretch. Our 3 love car rides and its fun for everyone!
