Without going into gory details, I am very dissatisfied with PetPlan. I don't want to lose coverage for Sawyer though...Recommendations on another company? Ideally, I'd like to switch and am hoping that switching companies will not cause a lapse in coverage. Has anyone had experience with this? I don't want to cancel until he's safely on another plan...

Kris~ If Sawyer has had no issues, you will probably not have any pre-existing conditions.  If you are thinking of changing insurance now would probably be the time to do it before anything does happen.  There are quite a few pet insurance companies now days.  At the time I put Beau on petplan, everyone was talking about how great petplan was, but that type of deductible is not for me.  It sounds like others are happy with it though.  Good luck in find the right plan for you and Sawyer..

I'm not going to lie, the title of this post bugs me a little bit!   The reason I say that is because someone will come in and do a search for Pet Insurance.  They will see the title of this and they will just think Pet Plan sucks ... Pet insurance sucks, see, they screwed this lady and they won't get insurance.   I think it is a little unfair to give them such a negative review when what caused the issue is that you did not thoroughly review things before you selected your policy.  That being said, there is never an excuse for bad customer service.  I'm sure that their owners would not like to know you feel like you got bad customer service.  I wasn't there obviously for that so can't address it.  What I can say is that I think each individual has different needs for their Pet Insurance.  Some people want insurance that covers their yearly exams.  For me personally I knew when I got a dog that I had to pay those so that isn't an issue.  Some, like you, don't want the per incident deductible ... I think where you live really plays into that.  I selected my deductible at $200 and where I live unless it is something major I'm not really going to hit the $200 amount on say an ear infection or UTI.  In my case if I need more than one or two deductibles I've got big problems. Those living in NYC or Chicago or Seattle or somewhere like that can get a $200 bill every time they go to the Vet.  I like knowing that if something major happens and my Vet is treating it after I pay $200 then the rest is paid.  If I have to go to a specialist then 80% is paid.  That is why I say that it is a very personal decision ... everyone has different needs.  There are all sorts of comparisons out there for different plans ... here is just one example http://www.caninejournal.com/pet-insurance-comparison-var3/?utm_exp...

No I didn't pick it because it put Pet Plan 1st, it is just the first one I clicked on.  Just google search Pet Insurance Plan Comparisons and there are many available.

I agree with this completely. :)

I agree, Sheri. I am worried someone is going to come along and discount Pet Plan or pet insurance over one review. It very clearly states the deductible is per incident and it is up to the consumer to know what you are buying. Like anything else, we are responsible for figuring out what is best for us, but I just don't think it is fair to say I didn't know this or that and I didn't understand this or that and then blame the insurance company. Now, that said, stuff happens, we all make mistakes, etc. and there is never any excuse for poor customer service. If it were me, I would write a detailed letter about your problem to the corporate office and try and see if somehow this can be remedied. Good luck!

I agree, the plan you purchase should be based on your individual situation and your needs. We've never submitted a claim (due to plan structure) but are very confident about our coverage!

We have a $500 per incident deductible with Trupanion and live in Seattle. Every time I go to the vet for a problem visit it's at least $150 but lower than $500 so I've never submitted a claim. However, this is by design. My premiums are lower because I have a higher deductible and I'm protected by an unlimited payout (that's why we picked Trupanion) for a catastrophic event. I know I can cover smaller costs without issue, I'm concerned about cancer or a prolonged hospital stay. I wish I had a yearly deductible, but per incident does have some benefits for chronic conditions.
My apologies if the title is worrisome. I would never go without insurance for Sawyer, which I stated in my post. Like I said, I was more upset about the customer service. Also, I forgot to mention that I called them 10 days ago inquiring about the claim. I was told yes it had gone through and they just mailed it out the day before. So I called again when it never came. That's when they told me it was denied. But I've still yet to receive anything on it. 10 days ago it was complete and mailed out and that rep did not say it had been denied. So I'm confused...

Bad customer service makes me furious. I always write a letter to the corporate office and in this case, I would stress that I am thinking about canceling my policy on my dog because of the poor customer service I received on my cat. Losing your business and money sometimes get their attention.  I am the queen of letter writing. LOL Sounds like you have been given the run around and I bet the first person screwed up. You should be able to sign on and see the status of your claim. Hope you get it all straightened out.

I agree, I would write to let them know of my dissatisfaction with the process.  In the beginning I got a little frustrated with them until I learned how it all works.  Sadly, I've had too much experience with how it works.  Just in case you haven't seen it yet you can look at all of these things and track the progress of your claim on their website.  It tracks it from receipt, through the evaluation process, and then says when it gets forwarded for payment and then a copy of the explanation is posted.

Every time I checked the status it always said, (and still does!) "closed. Your completed claim has been mailed to you." I never saw anything else. I did start the process a few days before we left on vacation. So maybe I missed the window of time where you can view it?

Kris -- Down where it says Details and you click on that to get where it says Closed, Completed Claim has been mailed to you, there should be a column that says view claim details, and there should be a picture of a PDF file that you can click on and that should be a copy of what gets sent in the mail giving you an explanation of the claim payout or denial.  Hope that helps.

Nope. Nothing. The only thing I can click on is "details" which gives me the closed message. There's nothing else. The column that says view claim details has "na" listed and you can't click on it..

Thanks for trying to help me though! I appreciate it.
