I have found that for my little M.J. Aroma Paws is the shampoo that leaves her smelling lovely the longest. Though we do bathe her about once a week because she is mostly cream colored and it helps with her allergies. Good luck!
Neither of my dogs smell like dogs LOL I bathe them every couple of weeks and it hasn't had any negative effect on their coats. I use Wahl Dirty Beasty and a conditioner. Rinsing really well is very important. Be sure to groom thoroughly before washing. Then dry and then groom again. Good luck.
Check his ears, he might have an ear infection. When we got Ned he stunk and we bathed him several times and he still stunk. Finally, we realized it was his ears. Once that was cleared up, no more stinky dog. Another possibility is that he might be rolling in something stinky in your yard. Does he wear a collar - maybe it stinks.
I'm very tolerant to dog odors having grown up with lots of animals, but my husband is not at all, and he has lots of animal allergies,( thankfully not to our pup!) so he is super sensitive to odors. We have found that running an air filter in the area of the house where he spends the majority of the time makes a huge difference. I should add that I bathe our puppy regularly and have had him groomed recently, and I don't really notice odors on him, but he has had a recurring yeast infection in his ear, which I do know has an odor.
Try Nootie shampoo. Some pet places carry it or you can order it online with ebay or other outlets. It is for cats and dogs of all ages. I use cherry blossom and the smell lasts for days. They also make a spray scented conditioner that you can use in between shampoos. Jace smelled alot when we got him and I freaked out that I was going to be stuck with a smelly dog! When he turned 6 mths it seemed to go away. Now the only time he smells is when he is playing hard outside...but i wipe him down with a wet cloth or bathe him. Jace gets a bath once a week no matter what. I hope that helps.
I actually have a preference for Sour Apple shampoo. It is human shampoo and leaves a nice odor (in my opinion). My little dog get bathed every time he goes to the dog park, the older dog maybe once a month. I guess they smell like dogs, but I like the smell. My house probably smells like dogs also (at least that is what my mom says) but it doesn't bother me. Conditioners - don't use them. They make the hair sticky. Keeps ears clean and learn how to express the anal gland. You will become accustomed to what needs to be done with your dog and how frequently to bath him. Many places (around here anyway) have dog bath areas that are rather like a car wash. You take them in, give them a bath yourself, and take them out. No mess to be cleaning up. We have a dog wash area in our laundry area so my dogs have never been out for grooming or boarding. It makes it easier for us.
I use Tropiclean Kava on Ragley and have since she came home. It is soapless so I never worry about drying her skin out and it has a very pleasant scent that leaves her coat smelling fresh without making her smell like she is wearing perfume- I don't care for "dog" smell, but I care for a dog smelling like a bottle of perfume even less. Some companies have sent us bottles/bars of other soaps to test out, but the Tropiclean Kava is still my favorite. It lathers well, lasts a long time, is a good price (if you email the company they will send you a coupon, too), and leaves Ragley's coat unbelievably soft and shiny. As Abigail mentioned, though, I'm sure the Orijen diet helps with this too.
+1 on tropiclean - love the smell. And you can use it on a dry coat to help with matting/brushing. I also use Burst Bees puppy formula which has a slight scent and is nice smelling and seems to last quite a while. We bathe every 2 weeks and Zoe's coat is gorgeous - no ill affects from 'over' bathing.
