I am getting my 8 month old doodle groomed for the first time soon. I've gotten her a puppy trim (face and sanitary trim) but no "official" groom yet. I REALLY want to keep her looking like a shaggy dog, but just a bit shorter. Does anyone have any tips I can give the groomer to express what I want? Is there a specific clipper length that you specify your groomer to use? Any tips and/or photos of your groomed, yet still shaggy doodles would be greatly appreciated! :)

I groom yogi, and I use scissors on his face and body. Here's his face, I go for more of a puppy look on his face

This is his body, probably took off 1 1/2 - 2 inches. As you can see, I don't take much off the legs, just blended it. I may take more off his legs next time, but this was my first attempt. He's 10 months now

Thank you for the tips and photos! You have such a cutie on your hands! I'm not quite ready to delve into the home-grooming arena yet. I can't imagine what Sophie would end up looking like. I will use your recommendations for the groomer, though :)

This is exactly what I am after too - I haven't groomed him yet but I was told to use a #3 on his face. keeps it shaggy but not shaved like a poodle but also not the beard look. then on his body to use a #10 blade with a comb. not sure of the comb length but i think it was #3.

Leita, I have clippers and combs. So far I've only used them for a sani trim, his belly fur once, and to trim the fur between his pads. I think it probably depends on your puppy's coat. Yogi is loose and wavy. It was very easy to use scissors and also very forgiving. I use thinning scissors on the top of his head. I use regular scissors on his beard, ear length, and the side of his mouth, then use thinning scissors to blend so it doesn't look straight cut... More natural that way. Good luck
My groomer calls it a 1/2 cut which means she takes off about 1/2 the length and not as short as she typically grooms other dogs. I would look at the length and express I you desires in those terms .... 1/2 length, 1/3 length.

Thanks for the tip! :)

Jax just got his first grooming

I love it! Did your groomer use scissors or clippers for the body length?

Have you checked some of the recent discussions? I think there have been a few that have had lots of pics in them of the more "shaggy" summer cut. I have pics in my home groom tutorial discussion that I wrote a couple months ago of Ragley's shaggy cut.

You know, I haven't! I will definitely check that out. I do remember your tutorial with Ragley. I'm not quite ready to home-groom yet but maybe one day I'll get there ;).. I will check it out again though and maybe show my groomer some photos so she can do a similar job. Your's turned out great!
