We had Polly clipped about 6 weeks ago and ended up loving the look. I decided today to buy a pair of clippers and try it myself. Today is bath day and my groomer gave me some great tips so when the girls came home all shiny clean I let them rest for awhile and we went at it. I used a 3/4 inch clip and we probably took about an inch of regrowth back off of her. I have to say, even if it is bragging, I am pleased with the results, it is an even cut, we had to put her back on the table to touch up where the base of her tail is but other than that she looks good and she stood there like this was her 24th time getting it done. Good Polly, I can breath now.
Meg likes to have her picture taken too...

Way to go, Polly! And way to go, you! It's such a feeling of accomplishment to groom the dog yourself and looks great!
Awww... they are so sweet. You did a great job.
Great job!! Polly looks terrific!! You are going to love being able to groom them yourself any time you want to! I love grooming my Bailey and sometimes I touch her up just because it is fun! Wonderful that Polly was so good on the table! Such sweet girls!
Great job, and congratulations! Its not nearly as intimidating as it seems. My favorite part of grooming my own doodles is knowing if I don't like it, I can change it. I don't have to live with it for 6 weeks until the next groom. Plus, no more frustration with the groomer not doing what I asked! Have fun :)
I got the Wahl, Lithiom-Ion. They had a $10.00 off coupon on them making it about $49.00. I tried to buy fairly inexpensive in case I couldn't get the hang of it I wouldn't lose a ton. As it turns out I enjoy it so when these burn out I won't feel bad repurchasing. That was the idea but so far they are doing a great job as long as she is thoroughly combed through before starting.
The thoroughly combed through part is the secret to any clippers working well. Even if you purchased a $500 pair, if she wasn't combed it wouldn't work. She looks great. The hardest part to grooming is that very first swipe you make with the clippers. After that, it's all good. It really isn't as hard as people would think. That is if you have a dog that behaves.
I made a discovery the other day when I gave Oscar a clipper cut with my Andis 2-speed. He's always had easy to cut hair, but this time I really struggled to get the clipper to go through his hair. It kept building up under the comb and sticking to the blade (the hair, that is). Turned out I'd used a 'fluff out' spray product on his coat before blow drying, one I'd used on Lucy's wool coat very successfully. It just didn't work on Oscar's soft curly coat and made clipper cutting almost impossible. I did eventually get through the cut, but I had to stop after every pass and take the comb off the blade and clean it thoroughly. Live and learn!
