So... are there any other dogs out there who don't mark their territory?

Luna is the only dog I know who doesn't mark at all.  She pees 3-4 times a day and that's it.  We'll go for an hour long walk and she just pees at the start (it's a LONG pee!) and then just enjoys the rest of her walk.  She's generally a very submissive dog and will expose her belly for any dog, even small puppies (except her best friends, it's instant play fighting with them).

Her friends (who are generally more dominant) pee at least 3-4 times per walk when we walk with them.

I'm just curious :)

Sadie is such an enthusiastic marker that when she sees one of her friends peeing at the dog park she will literally run halfway across the field to pee over it. She also almost always paws at the spot on the ground once or maybe twice before marking--does anyone else's dog do that?

One of Luna's friends (a bichon/maltese) does that!  If she sees another dog peeing/pooping she RUNS so that she can pee on top.  Silly.

The female Golden I mentioned in another post, had to cover every one of our dog's pee. We had 4 Goldens, and she would run around to each spot to cover over there pee. Talk about " controlling"! ;)

Ragley hasn't displayed any sort of marking behaviors so far. Our male lab marks on top of everything

Enzo has no desire to mark. At the start of a walk she will go on command, and then that will be it. Our Golden, a male , was the same way. One pee per walk! Now his Mom, was a whole other story. I swore she calculated the amount she would pee each time as to have enough to cover our walk. She felt the need to mark everything AND would often hike her leg as well!

lol

My neighbor's dog (a pug named Thor - awesome name for a pug!) is not so good with the pee calculation.  He has a big pee at the start of the walk and by halfway through he has no pee left... but lifts his leg to "mark" anyway.  Silly Thor.

Sadie very often hikes her leg when she marks--she looks a little bit like she's doing yoga. :)
Boris waits until he gets home no matter how long we go out for. Riley on the other hand.....

Wilson isn't a marker and isn't submissive - seems like a strange combo.  He was neutered at 12 weeks or so (arrived at 16 weeks).  He still likes to check pee mail, but doesn't mark over it.  Thankfully!  Marking drives me crazy.

A friend, who I walk with a few times a week, has a female labradoodle who constantly marks!  And is definitely "in charge!"

Murphy started marking rather late I think, around 4 yrs old. Bella doesn't at all and she is 4 now. They walk so well on leash, that I do give them time to check pee-mail and let Murphy leave his mark. Seems like a dog's way of learning about other dogs and communicating by leaving their scent. I can see what Lori means about the Labradoodle being in charge, and its all in being in control of when and if they are allowed to stop. They stop when I let them, and not stop if I don't let them, our command is ""Lets go" if I feel the slightest hesitation on the leash, and I don't miss a step. So it is possible to be in charge of marking if one wants to.
What I find funny tho is Murphy does dole it out in very tiny increments and I am always amazed that he knows how to ration it out at each bush, never running dry. :) Bella hardly ever goes pee and never poops on our walks. Has to be home.

Both of my guys mark, but that may be because they're trying to "out pee" each other to show who is the most "manly".  They store it up....just go a tiny bit at a time.  I've always thought it was a "guy thing" because the female dalmatian we had before G&M never did this.

Both of the boys squat and empty completely every time - no marking whatsoever. Buddy has tried and failed though! A few times in his nine years he's lifted his leg on a tree, and he either misses completely or he tips over. Lol.
