Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello! My fiance and I want to get another dog. We have a 6 yr old Goldendoodle who of course is very lovable but we feel bad since we are moving out of my parents house, whom she would have constant attention from, and living on our own and we are afraid she may get lonely and depressed while we are at work. I could just be being very over protective but we would hate to see her happy self become sad. I was just wondering if anyone can give me any other breeds that will match well with a Goldendoodle. I was looking for something a little smaller than her but its not set in stone. =) thank you!

I agree that doodles seem to love other doodles. When Libby goes to day care she would rather be with the people, except the days that there are other doodles there. When I pick her up on those days the girls always tell me how much she played with them! But I know doodles like other dogs, as well. A meet and greet sounds like a good plan!

My standard puppy loves tiny dogs if they aren't yapping at him. I'm always afraid though because he likes to jump around and I get scared that he'll crush the little ones. :P

Ya I am really liking the meet and greet idea too...and Penny is the same way, she LOVES people.

Hoka loves his sister Moxie, a little terrier mix from the local rescue.  She is awesome!

So adorable!!!

Sooooo much cuteness going on in this photo!

How cute!

When my goldendoodle died in February, we thought Harpo would be a fine only dog - but he was not.  When dogs are raised together, they really need a companion.  I am planning to get a sheepadoodle, but that is about a year down the road and my husband said it was unacceptable to expect him to wait a year for his companion.  So, I put out the word that I was looking for a rescue and I got three immediately (I am on the foster list for IDOG and DRC).  One was a Jackapoo and two were ALDs.  The Jackapoo was the best match energywise and loved to wrestle, so he is the one we kept.  They are great with each other and as soon as Harpo met him they started to play.  Doodles just seem to pick out other doodles (even on the beach) so you may find the perfect match for him by keeping open to whatever seems right.  Good luck.  Two dogs are, however, more work than one, so be ready to make the necessary changes in your life also.  Here is our little guy on his Saturday morning pancake hunt.

So sorry for your loss =( but I am glad Harpo has his new buddy =) He is adorable btw...and I like the idea of trying the foster route too.

Richard is right - get in contact with some rescue groups and foster families and the perfect dog will come along.  Your local SPCA is a great place to start looking, but get a start with IDOG and DRC also.  There are so many dogs out there that need a good home.  A breeder told me that Zeppo was a possible mini-labradoodle, but we don't think that is true.  This dog climbs trees and I have never seen a doodle do that.

Holly gets along wonderfully with our Maltese and Maltese-Mix fosters

Holly is wonderful with all of our foster puppies like Zack who is a Maltese-Chihuahua mix.

But, Holly is not unique.  Our foster Labradoodles and Goldendoodles get along very well with our smaller dogs.

Our foster Labradoodle, CoCo, and a foster Maltipoo  (Maltese-Poodle mix) puppy.

Sully, another foster, also got along quite well with the Maltese and Maltese-Mix dogs

Sophie, our first doodle foster and Holly got along famously.  Sophie also got along wonderfully with our smaller dogs.

Holly and Sophie...

We make sure that the dogs meet under controlled conditions.  We don't worry about Holly reacting badly to any new dog but, we want to be sure that the new dog doesn't react badly to Holly.  However, even the dogs who are fearful of big dogs soon warm up to Holly.  I would say that she is unique but, our seven or so foster doodles have been also very good with the smaller dogs.

If your doodle is not used sharing you with other dogs, we suggest that you treat the doodle just like you would treat an existing child when bringing a baby sibling into your home; make sure that you give equal attention to the doodle and new dog.

I would suggest that, at least at the start, you feed the dogs in separate areas.  Also, know your dog well enough to interdict any problems.  We know that Holly doesn't like to share her bully sticks so we make sure that she can have some private chew time...

Maltipoos are great little dogs and are very available,,,
