Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Georgia has a best friend at the dog park that is a 95lb black lab.

This lab has had super soft bowel movements for the last few months at least. Otherwise very healthy and normal.

The owner has been feeding her chicken soup for the soul for a few years now. But does give her people treats such as cheese or dog cookies (healthy ones). She cut down on those to see if it made a difference and it didn't.

She did a fecal test recently that came up clean.

She put her dog on an organic chicken and rice diet only for the last few days and the poops are a little more normal.

The vet had suggested doing that for a week and then putting her back on her regular food. She is debating on doing that vs putting her on a different food. She is asking for my advice and I am hesitant after reading things here to tell her to trust her vet. I know the vet she is going to and they are good vets but may not overly knowledgeable on dog food brands and hesitant to recommend premium brands as they mostly service a lower class neighborhood.

What would you recommend I tell her?

In this case I agree with the vet: she needs to go back to the regular food first and see if the stools become soft again. If she switches to a new food and the poop gets soft, she won't know if that's the same old problem as before or if the new food is causing a problem.

If she goes back to the old food and the stool gets soft again, then she can try switching to a new food. I would recommend that she go with a grain free formula, and maybe try switching protein sources. Wellness Simple Solutions Salmon/Potato might be a good choice for her, it's widely available and most dogs do very well with it.

thanks Karen,

I will relay the message.
