Here's a good article on 9 Must Follow Manuscript Rules: http://writersdigest.com/article/before-you-submit
I highly recommend the book, "On Writing" by Stephen King. Even if you're not a Stephen King fan you'll learn LOTS from this master storyteller. He gives practical advice on everything from plot and character development to work habits and rejection.

YES, YES, THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. SO IS THE FLIP DICTIONARY AND DEBRA DIXON'S gOAL, MOTIVATION AND CHARACTER.

Here are a bunch of blog entries with advice to writers from a publishing company. Even if you are not a genre fiction writer, I think you might enjoy reading these posts. In particular there are a couple posts in which the managing editor compiled responses the editors give her explaining why they accept or reject manuscripts.

Here's a good article on (four) ways to improve your writing and make every word count: http://writersdigest.com/article/4-ways-to-make-every-word-count/?e...

Love this info.  Thanks for posting.   I am in the middle of writing a "Young  Adult" novel.  You have  encouraged me to subscribe to "Writers Digest" which I have been meaning to do for a year now.

I am a romance writer and here are my favorite books on craft: The Emotional Thesaurus; The Negative Trait Thesaurus. Tips on self-publishing: Do you homework and find out everything you can. Don't give anybody any money to publish your book. Most important: put you butt down in the chair and write everyday. My labradoodle, Andy, keeps me company when I write which is everyday. Would you like to see my blog: www.sadiecarrieri.com. or my Facebook: Sarina Rostek. My debute book is called THE RELENTLESS SPY
