My Meg is a champion shedder and I am not an enthusiastic enough housekeeper to stay in front of all that hair. I feel bad that I am the way I am but not enough to change it. The second part of the hair issue is that since we have both dogs I realize that the dust factor has tripled and when I vacuum the bin is full of that grey powder (dander?). Here lately I have just been frantic about the issue, I know it needs more than I throw at it, the girls are NOT going anywhere so we just live with it, one strategy is to quit wearing black around the house (or any other color than grey or white).
So I stumbled on an add for Roomba, fat chance that could keep up with my Meg but desperate times call for desperate measures, right? We bit the bullet and bought the one with rubber rollers on it. It has been a jaw dropping experience for the last three days. I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS THING!! We did a thorough vacuuming and then put it down the next day to go to work, I want to pick it up and hug it. This little buggar just runs all over the place doing exactly what it is meant to do. I am still so fascinated that I dump it out in a white plastic bag just so I can see how successful it is. No wonder I couldn't keep ahead of it. If you are sitting on the fence about whether or not to invest in one I hope you go ahead and do it. We read all the reviews on each model before deciding, this model does not have brushes, but rubber rollers instead that are easier to get the hair off, a must have here. It does not scare my girls like the vacuum does and between the Roomba being a little work horse and the new air filter we put in the dust on the furniture is more manageable as well.
Just wanted to share how happy I am...

Sounds like the perfect solution for you. I have been thinking about getting one too. We have more tile than carpet, so I am not sure how practical it is. Need to do some research.
It makes very short work of my hard floor in the kitchen, I do still run the Swiffer under the edges of the fridge, stove and dish washer, and tight corners it does not fit in. The plus is that with less hair floating around that will probably only be a one to two time a week job.
Thanks for letting me know that Judy. I want for sure now!
I am going to check this out! I too have simply given up. Clancy is such a shedder, and the dogs running in and out all the time bringing the outdoors inside, makes it impossible to keep up.
We have been on the fence about purchasing a Roomba or a Dyson. Your post had perfect timing! I think we will give the Roomba a try!
Wow! You should do an add for Roomba.
Do you have a "furminator" - a type of brush/comb that is great for dogs that shed. Fifteen minutes with a furminator is like an hour with a regular brush. They are available at any large pet store.
Ha ha, you are right, I do sound like an add and even worse I am more in love with it every day. My carpets are looking pretty good and I have not ran into one tumbleweed in my kitchen.
We do have a furminator and it takes tons off of Meg but I think she would have to be shaved to the skin to make a difference. She has longer wirey hair on her back and the top of her legs, her tail is more lab like but the under side of it has longer hair than a lab's and then she has an undercoat that for comparison's sake I refer to as down like you would find on a goose. When you scratch her or she shakes it just flies off of her. I have never seen a dog throw as much fur as she can...but we love her and just keep looking for ways to manage it.
We bought a Roomba last summer. We live on a lake and have a white sandy beach. Cuba loves to get in the lake and then track the sand into the house. We have tile floors throughout the downstairs. The Roomba picks up the sand and any lint/dander also. Cuba doesn't shed so the sand was the biggest issue for us.
I have it scheduled to run in the evenings after we go to bed, so we wake up to clean floors. It's an expensive solution, but one that works.
I'm so excited to see this post! I've wondered if that would be a good solution here. I'm kind of stunned how much more dust there seems to be with two dogs instead of one. Between the the dust on hardwood floors and the tumbleweeds, it can make a girl insane, lol! I just can't stay in front of it - and, frankly, I have no desire to vacuum the whole house every 2 days. I think that sounds like a good job for the Roomba! :)
We were also shocked at how much more the second dog added, even though our first is the shedder. As an update after using the Roomba for a week I decided I should get the Dyson out and just check on how well "the Maid" has been doing. Success! I dumped out the very same amount my Roomba picks up every day.
