Good Morning! I'm in need of more advice for Roo. I've been on DK for over a year and always find that the advice given here is the best :)

Background:

Roo loves to eat. Food and socks included. Up until two weeks ago, he's always been able to throw them up with a tablespoon of hydrogren peroxide. (This has happened 3 times). We took him to the emergency vet and they gave him a stronger drug to make him puke and that worked. When Roo first started eating socks, we started gating off our laundry. Obviously, we need to take stronger precautions.

Monday&Tuesday:

Roo was  his normal crazy self. Ate all of his food (Orijen Adult) and had normal stools.

Wednesday Morning/Afternoon:

We woke up around 5:30am to Roo puking. It was yellowy and had some leftover food from the night before. Took him out, and he had a normal poop. Then, when I went to feed him. He refused to eat or drink, even his favorite treats. That was such a red flag to me. Roo eats everything. Took him to the vet. They did X-Rays. The vet wasn't able to identify anything in his intestines. She said there was a lot of gas and there was a blur that made her concerned. She gave him anti-nauseous medicine and fluids since he was dehydrated. She said to feed him a bland diet and monitor him.

Wednesday Night:

Roo's very tired but he drank water when we got home from the vet. I made him chicken and sweet potatoes and he eat that no problem. He didn't poop that night though.

Thursday Morning:

Roo ate the chicken but didn't touch the sweet potato. He normally loves sweet potatoes. Then I had to head to work, but my boyfriend took him out and said he didn't poop and wouldn't eat the chicken when they got back inside.

Anyway - now I'm panicking. We're going in for the Xrays tonight. If the vet still can't identify if it's actually something in his stomach, what do you advise we do? I would hate to opt for surgery, put him through that, and then it's nothing. Is there anything else that it could be? Our vet wasn't really discussing any other possibilities.

Sorry for the lengthy story. I really appreciate any advice. Roo's my first dog and I'm learning and understanding everything. Thanks :)

No advice but hoping for a solution tonight.

thank you :)

I advise you to take your sweet Roo to the vet again. This could indeed be an intestinal blockage. I can well-imagine you are worried sick. Hoping and praying Roo will recover quickly.

thank you! We have an appointment tonight

I would skip your GP vet and head straight to the ER. They can do an ultrasound, which will show things that an Xray can't.

It does sound like a foreign body of some type, and the longer it sits there, the worse the prognosis.

I agree, Karen! If it is a foreign body (sock, etc) it could be life threatening. Since Roo is an avid eater and he isn't eating normally or pooping at all, you could have a very critical situation. Hoping all of this worry is for naught but better to be safe than sorry.

Yep. And I wouldn't wait until tonight.

So sorry about Roo. Please let us know what doc says. I hope he gets treatment and gets better asap. Best,
Ditto.

Thanks everyone. I have a client presentation for work that I can't miss. My boyfriend is heading home and then I'm meeting them at the vet as soon as I'm done. Starting crying at my desk and trying to pull it together before this meeting. Damn these dogs really know how to capture our love huh?

Katie, I am hoping your presentation goes smoothly. You are taking care of Roo by sending him to the vet with your boyfriend. There is nothing more you need to do now except finish your work and then go to the vet. Hoping you can get through this with the assurance that you have done what needs to be done. Please update as you can. We all care about Roo and you.

I would go to an animal hospital, too. When Lexi was sick two weeks ago we brought her in, and they saw the same fuzzy stuff on her x-ray - unsure if it was an object or gas. They actually suggested we leave her there for observation, and they gave her fluids all day, and x-rayed again six hours later explaining that if the object was gone, it was gas, but if it was still there it was an obstruction. If nothing else, the ER can monitor Roo in a way a regular vet can't. Better safe than sorry.
