This morning we took Wally and Charlotte out to a local farmers market, where our paths intersected with a very friendly Portuguese Water Dog and its (obnoxious) owner. While the dogs greeted one another, the owner asked if ours were doodles. Then, she proceeded to say, "Mine is the real deal." Dumbfounded but prepared, I looked directly at her and asked, "What is that supposed to mean?" Not expecting my blunt reaction, she responded by saying, "Well, they're not recognized by the AKC." I turned to my husband, shook my head in disbelief, and we walked away. I hope she got the message. The nerve!

I was at an agility trial a few weeks ago with my F1 LD. As I was about to go into the ring, the gate steward asked me if he "was the result of one of those Labrador experiments?" I was struck dumb!! I was focused on my dog and being ready to compete and she me asked that!! Who says things like that??!! I didn't say anything in response, and of course now in hindsight I can think of many things I could have and should have said, along with some I could and shouldn't have!!

Oh Stella that is unconscionable! Not only rude beyond belief, but a major distraction just prior to your competition. I can't think of any response that doesn't begin with a four letter word.

In a strange way, I'm sort of hoping that our paths cross again this weekend.  Hummmmm . . . What would I say???

It happened again -- this time when I was with Charlotte. I was out shopping with her two days ago, when we both heard a sort of tongue-clicking sound. You know, the type of vocalization that you'd make when you want to get the attention of a dog or even a little baby -- a come here or look-at-me sound. Charlotte and I both looked around to see who was making the quiet noise, and saw a man nearby who wanted to say hello. We walked towards him, and he bent down to pet her. When he asked, "What is she?" I responded that she's a labradoodle. Then stood up and said to me, "She's a beautiful mutt." I stiffened up, looked straight at him, and asked the same question that I asked of he lady with the Portuguese Water Dog: "What is that supposed to mean?" His response was, "A mutt is a dog of uncertain or questionable lineage." Why do people say such things, and why does it continue to irritate the blankety-blank out of me?!

I doesn't sound like he meant to be rude, but he was. I've been fortunate not to have any negative comments made to me and Andie.

Oh, I do think that he meant it to be rude -- that is why it bugged me so much. And he was, oh, so, condescending as he defined the word, mutt, to me.

Focus on what he really said... she is a BEAUTIFUL mix. :-)  Don't let someone else's poor choice of words grind you- that is giving them waaaay more power and cluttering up your brain. It's not worth it!

You know cockapoos are just as much of a "mutt" as a labradoodle or goldendoodle and yet people seem to have no problem calling them cockapoos. I can't understand why they can't seem to do the same with our dogs. The first time I took Tara to a vet for her 8 week check up, the receptionist asked me her breed. I said "She's a miniature Australian Labradoodle", at which point she said  "mixed breed" and typed it onto her chart. :(  So I repeated "She's a ..."   I thought she had just ignored me until she printed out my receipt and it had "miniature..."  on it.  :) So I learned to just keep repeating...some people have thicker heads than others! LOL  So in the situation you had today I would have just repeated back to him "Yes, she is a beautiful labradoodle."  :) Now what is bothering me is that as I am typing this "labradoodle" and "goldendoodle" are underlined in red as if they were a typo. :(

I always say with pride that Ruby is a mutt---like me--we both come from a wonderful heritage of beautiful, smart beings. No blue bloods here. I find that when I call both of us mutts people can't think of anything rude to say. Mostly everyone on the trails and in public falls in love with her.

Here's  a secret:  When I took Gavin for his TDI testing the tester (a very biased poodle lady) asked me the breed and I said "goldendoodle."  After I got the paperwork home I noticed she put breed as "poodle mix."  When I got my ID card, under breed it said:  "mixed."  So, on my one year renewal, I renewed online and went into my profile and changed the breed to "goldendoodle."  That's what appears on his ID card now ;)
