I figure there's got to be some other chickens out there! Loki has recently become afraid of the dishwasher, we live in an apartment so it's not like he can go to the other end of the house to avoid it. Currently he has taken to hiding in the bath room (why I'm not sure) until the dishes are done rinsing. Anyone else encounter this? Any tips for making that mean mean dishwasher seem more friendly? I'm not too worried because he's not shaking or getting visibly up set he just won't go anywhere near it. If I stop and think about it this is kind of funny. Interested in hearing if any other doods out there are chickens! Also Loki hates vacuums and cold air returns. :)

Annabelle doesn't like the vacuum cleaner. The dishwasher is ok. Ours isn't too noisy. She hates the barking dogs next door. When I take her out late at night, if they are out barking, she would rather just hold it all night than spend another second outside with them. Years ago I had a golden retriever that was afraid of thunderstorms. He would go hide in the shower until it was all over. He would lay down on the shower floor and cover his ears with his paws.

Oh that's adorable! Loki hasn't climbed in the tub yet but who knows what he'll do next! But poor Annabelle! Hopefully those other dogs are nice to her!

You might try to desensitize Loki to the vacuum and dishwasher. The vacuum might be easier to do, though.
Vacuum cleaner: With it out but not running, put some treats on the vacuum. When he seems to be comfortable going up to the vacuum, try turning it on when he can see it but is far enough away that he doesn't seem frightened. Give him treats and praise. Over the course of several days (or longer) work to get him closer to the vacuum when it is running by treats and praise. It may take a while so don't rush him.

Maybe, you can try the dishwasher in a similar way. When does he run away from the dishwasher? Is it when he sees you load and then shut the door, or is it when it starts. Give him treats and praise by the dishwasher so that he is comfortable being near. You have to figure out the best starting place for him to be that you can give him treats and praise before he runs to the bathroom but after the dishwasher starts. That may be a two-person job.

No idea about the cold air returns.

Good luck. My doodle started out being scare of the vacuum and now she wants to play with it when I am vacuuming the floor.

We are working on the vacuum but that's going to be a project for a very long time lol. With the dishwasher he will sleep next to it when it's not running and when the door is open he sniffs it he will sit by it when I loading dishes, literally it couldn't bother him until it turns on then he goes and plops down in the bathroom until it's done. I'll bring him over when it's going and he will sit there if I tell him to but as soon as he gets his treat it's back to the bathroom. I honestly think it's jut that he doesn't like the noise of it because same thing with the cold air return he will lay up against it but when it turns on he goes and lays by my bed. Maybe they are making sounds that are hurtful to his ears? I'm not sure
Hurley does not like the vaccuum cleaner sound. He just moves to another room. He backs away from anyone that comes in the house with a package or a hat on. He is 3 years old. I work on desensitizing him but progress is slow
That's interesting that hats bother him! Has he always been bothered by them?
My last dog was terrified of running water; sink, bathtub, shower, dishwasher, hose, and so on. She was a stay before we got her so thinking she may have been hosed by property owners? She'd hide outside,
Oh that's so sad!!
Jolene, that is so sad. It is painful to hear how people treat their animals.

Nope, no noise-fear issues at our house. In fact, I would appreciate a little healthy respect for the vacuum cleaner, broom and other cleaning instruments when they are in action.

Ha, right? I would love to mop in peace. Or mop at all.

Haha that's funny! Loki goes crazy when the vacuum is on he grabs his favorite toy (security blanket?) and runs and hids in whatever corner is farthest away from the vacuum.
