Charlie went to get groomed yesterday and when I picked him up she told me he was gassy. I made a comment about how he does get gassy sometimes and they're super smelly (I don' t think anyone's flatulance smells like roses.. lol) and she asked what I feed him, so I proudly say Orijen.

She then says, "Let me show you what I feed my dogs/what you should switch to".. she goes to get her bag of TLC! Which is funny because that's what Charlie was originally on from the breeder. So I explained how Orijen is a high-quality food, grain-free, made in Canada, etc. and she goes on to tell me how it's too high in protein and high protein in dogs causes kidney problems (which I googled and found is false/a myth) and how dogs have been domesticated and should not have a diet consisting of high protein, AND that his high protein diet is the reason why his farts are so smelly and his poop is soft.

So of course I leave there baffled and confused because everythingggg I read on here says the total opposite and it's just so interesting to me this mix of information going around with dog food and what we should/shouldn't do and what is/isn't right or true.

I just felt like sharing this, it made me chuckle.

The internet has made it possible for all kinds of misinformation to become widespread, lol.

Oh, brother.

But, I have to say, for what it's worth,  that Tara can't eat Orijen without getting digestive issues. I don't know why I just know that she always had loose/soft poop when she ate it. She does fine with Acana though. :)

One of my dogs didn't do well on it either.  He LOVED it but he was super gassy and smelly.  I don't think it has anything to do with the quality of Orijen.  My vet suggested we do a trial with no poultry for him.  He is eating Acana pork and homemade and doing much better.

Deborah has a good thought NIkki, maybe you could do a trial with Acana  or another high quality dog food and just see if he does any better with it.

Orijen has a fairly high fat content; it's possible that's what doesn't agree with Tara. Or it could be something else about the formula, but the protein percentage would be my very last guess, lol.

You're right Karen, besides the Acana, Tara eats a high protein homemade food without any problems. Groomers should stick to grooming. :)

Amen to that.

It also occurs to me that since TLC is sold thru a pyramid deal, maybe the groomer pushes it because she gets a commission if you buy it.

Just to add my two cents worth... Addie did fine on Orijin puppy but had loose stools on Orijen adult. My previous dog had trouble with chicken, so I went to a Fromm 4-star non-chicken recipe (adult formulas of Fromm were easier to get locally than adult formulas of Orijen, ) Addie's stools became firm once I switched.

Isn't TLC one of those multi level marketed foods?if the groomer can get you to buy it through her, she will get a commission!

Yep, I said the same above. GMTA!

That'll teach me to read all of the replies before responding lol.

As long as you stick with a grain free formula, and he has no digestive issues, you should be fine doing it cold turkey.
