So, last night, Ace pooped and it was ick, pudding like consistency. I just spoke to my family to check on him and they told me his poop this morning was normal.

We have not changed anything in his diet although yesterday he did knaw on one of those Nyla dental bones (but he's had one of those a few weeks ago with no issues). What has changed is we have increased the amount of food he gets at each feeding (+3/4 cup at each meal). Another change is that he eats all of his food super fast now. He just started this behavior Tuesday.

Could the fast eating or the increased amount of food contribute to pudding poop?

Fast eating should not affect the consistency of the poop. Too much food in too short a period could cause greater stool volume and possibly also loose stools.

If the stool was normal this morning, I wouldn't be too concerned. Keep a close eye on him. I'd also cut back the food again, at least a little. 1.5 cups per day more than he was eating is a HUGE increase, possibly too much for him all at once.

To slow down his eating, many people have had great success with the Slo-Bowl. We've had many discussions in the Food Group and in the main forum about it, there was even a DK Slo-Bowl giveaway contest because so many people liked it.

We experienced this sometimes when our puppy was younger, but his poops were always normal again the next day. We kind of felt sometimes that it was because Angus would often go every time we walked him - which was a lot when he was younger! We did see some improvement in the consistency of his poos when we started adding a scoop of pumpkin about 5 months old, though...maybe that might help the digestion?

Did you use pumpkin puree?

Canned pure pumpkin, NOT pie filling.

A cheaper way to add fiber (which is all you're doing with pumpkin) is to just use sweet potatoes. Bake in microwave, the peel comes right off, mash with a fork and you're done. And sweet potatoes have more fiber than pumpkin, too.

But you really do need to cut back some of that food, too, IMO.

Yep! Find the canned pumpkin - in our stores it's in the baking section - just make sure you check the back of the can to make sure it says that the ingredient is just pure pumpkin because as Karen said it's tricky with "pie filling" they add in sugar and whatnot. I didn't go the sweet potato route only because of laziness, I'd say. It's hard at 5:30 in the morning for me to do anything let alone cook sweet potatoes haha...

got it, thanks. :-)

Honestly, I'm lazy too and I hate cooking, but the sweet potatoes are so easy. Most microwaves have a "baked potato" setting, but if not, a large sweet potato takes 7 minutes on high. You don't have to wash or peel it first, you don't even need a plate, just lay it in there. Once it cools, the peel comes off with your fingers. You can mash it with a fork into a plastic container and you're done; one fork to wash, and it keeps in the fridge so you can do it the night before.

In most stores in my area, I've found that canned pure plain pumpkin is sold in the canned fruit and vegetable section, not the baking section. The baking section is where I see the pie filling, and that's what you don't want. But I guess every store is different.

I'll tell you what, I looked forever for the canned pumpkin until running into it in the baking section randomly one time. And I do see the pie filling too, but I always make sure to check the ingredients. And actually sometimes they're labeled as "pie filling" and the ingredients still only says "pure pumpkin" .. no idea what that's about...

FYI... I did find cans of pure pumpkin in the canned vegetable aisle at the supermarket. The pumpkin pie filling is what was in the baking aisle.

That's how it is in my area, too.

Yes idk why they dont have it in the veggie aisle.where we are...I always look but have never found canned pumpkin outside the baking aisle...maybe whole foods would have it with the veggie. Hmmm
