Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Our Goldendoodle puppy is 11 weeks old and I feel like she drinks quite a bit even to the point I feel she is obsessed with water. Of course you know what goes in must come out and it seem like twice as much. She will drink and not eat. I take her out every 30 to 40 minutes and she is still peeing in between. When she goes it seems to be small amounts. I'm a little frustrated... Please help!

I always thought Enzo drank a lot as a puppy too. Our Vet said this was so much better than being dehydrated, as she was healthy in every other way. She did grow out of spending so much at the water bowl. If your girl is peeling I between outings....try staying out longer with her. Again, I quickly learned Enz was a " double pee'er". She would not empty her bladder on the first pee. Once I figured this out, we had no accidents in between outings.
My first thought was to check for a UTI. My second was that going out every 30-40 minutes is too frequent! A healthy pup that age with good, close supervision she should be able to sustain for two hours, right guys? It's worth at least a call to the vet...
At 11 weeks, I was still taking Enz out every 40-45 minutes. She was able to hold it through the night, but didn't seem to care about the daytime hrs.
I guess a UTI could be a possibility....depends how often she is going.
Ooh, and you're using Nature's Miracle to clean the accidents, right?
Yes, using natures miracle.

I had Gracie on a self waterer and she seemed to be a little too obsessive about getting drinks of water from it. I did switch her to just a bowl. From what I've read some pups do not have a water shut-off valve just like there are some who do not have a food switch. Anyway, if she is out of water and needs/wants more she will sit by her bowl and I give her just enough to satisfy her thirst. She is older now (5 months), so eventually I'm thinking of reintroducing the self waterer.

The other thing since your dog is only peeing small amounts, it could be a uti. Can you spot any blood or very dark urine? Or is it just clear? The more she drinks the clearer it is going to be. When Gracie was drinking in excess, she initially had yellow urine (like early in the morning), but then as the day went on and the more she drank it would be almost clear. At that time there was snow on the ground, so I could see the color changes.

The other thing is is that her bladder probably isn't holding much so of course she is going to need to go out more the more she drinks. The only way you will know for sure if it is a uti is to get her checked by the vet.

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to get her checked... I will update.
Please keep us posted. We will be wishing good thoughts for you both.
Was it a UTI? Hope she's feeling better...
So Im not alone. I have an 8 week old and you wouldve thought her life depended on drinking water! Sometimes Id even watch her with amazement while she laps up the whole bowl. Then when she runs out she'd put both front paws inside her bowl and look at me asking for refills. Adorable! So after the checkup did you find any UTI related business? Id be interested to know. My girl visited the vet last week with no problems.
Vet did not do a urine sample but did decide to treat her for UTI due to symptoms with Amoxicillin. Nothing has changed and I can't figure out the water obession. I can't even give her a bath with her lapping up what seems like a gallon of water or take her out in the morning without her trying to lick every blade of grass in our yard with dew. I'm really frustrated. It's nonstop cycle.
This sounds so much like Gracie. She was crazy about water and I had to limit it making sure she got enough for her weight plus a little more. She is 5 months now and is pretty much potty trained as long as we pay attention to her clues. She gets just enough water to quench her thirst, but now I'm offering more to see if she has learned that she doesn't have to drink it all.
She does leave some in the bowl now. So there's hope.
With her it was eating snow, but even recently when she didn't have to pee right away she did go after the dew. If she was out intent on eating snow and not doing her business, then I crated her for about 15 min then took her out again. Usually she would get to business the second time around. But, sometimes she needed a 3rd try. ;)

Some pups just don't have he water shut off valve like some don't have the food shut off valve.
I forget what their needs are as per how much water for their body weight, but you can search the Google machine and find the answer. :D

So many things that I worried about when Gracie was younger has now vanished. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. But, there's always a new thing to work on with these pups. ;)

Oh, and I offer her ice cubes too. I think some of the water lapping as pups has to do with the fun of it. If it's the evening and cut off time for water then I offer her an ice cube. Especially since zoomies always happen after water cut off time. Lol
