Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
So we were pretty certain we wanted a mini UNTIL our breeder let us know that one of her current puppies is available after a family changed their mind. Of course I fell head over heels with his cuteness as soon as I saw his photos! He's an F1B standard goldendoodle expected to be 40-45lbs, so now we need to decide if we want to stay on our original waiting list for the F1B mini (expected to be 20-25lbs) or if we should welcome this little cutie into the family. He already has the cuteness factor going for him for sure! We are a little concerned with sizing since we have two small kids. I'd love to see how big your doodles are and how much they ended up weighing to sort of get a better idea of what we can expect and to hopefully help us a bit with our HUGE decision :)

Both of Dash's parents were large (90 and 95 pounds), but Dash took it to another level at 120 pounds. The only other doodle I've met that was that large was at a doodle romp in Seal Beach California. After talking to them for while, it turns out that he was from the same breeder in Western Montana! Small World! They were probably related, but the people I met didn't know their dog's exact parents. Just the breeder.
Love that last shot!
With regards to which way to go, it is more about what your family can handle. If size is truly an issue, I would not risk going with a standard size doodle. I just helped rehome a pair of litter mates. The female was 70 lbs and the male was 138 lbs. So, as you can see parents size has nothing to do with it. Unless you go with a breeder that has been breeding these parents for several litters and has a good idea of size, you are taking a chance. Even then, they could throw a big one. What you need if you choose a standard size is excellent training. You are going to need to train the kids and the puppy. The puppy is going to knock the kids down. I think that one thing you need to factor in is how much your kids have been around dogs. We have a nephew that doesn't like our dogs at all as they are too big. Another that is just 18 months that loves them. He can't get enough of them. If you guys are experience dog owners that have been through lots of training and know what to expect and your children have been around lots of big dogs then it should be ok. Otherwise, I might suggest waiting.
I completely agree! After seeing and hearing how unpredictable sizing can be me and my husband have decided its best for us to stay on our original waiting list for the mini doodle. That way if the puppy ends up being on the larger size for minis I'll still be able to handle him on my own when my husband isn't around. 80 - 100lbs would just be way too large for our family, so as cute as the puppy is I rather not take that risk and have that puppy go to a family that is a little more prepared for a larger dog.
He loves his mama!!!! So sweet!
That photo is so adorable!!!!!! :)
What a happy guy!
What a sweetie! They do love their balls!
Aw, she's pretty!
I have a question about the size categories. Some breeders call a 45 pound dog "Standard" and others call them "medium". And I don't hear of any special category named for the "small horse" size. Do any of you know of a special classification for the "over 100 pounds" category?
