I have been trying to find a cheaper flea and tick product. I have always gotten Frontline Plus from our vet, and it has always worked great. No problems at all. We live on 20+ wooded acres, so fleas and ticks are a huge problem. I have recently switched our senior boxer/shepherd mix to a generic form of Rimadyl (for arthritis), called Quellin, and bought through Drs. Foster and Smith online. It is a big savings, so I was trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to go through them than through the vet. My husband is a pharmacist, and has always bought generic over the counter everything. He found an article by Consumer Reports that says, the patent has expired on fipronil, one of the active ingredients in Frontline Plus, opening up the market to competitors. In May, they found two that were new to the market, Sentry FiproGuard Plus at Petco, and PetArmor Plus at Walmart. The savings is sizable. PetArmor Plus 3 mo. supply cost $28, compared with $50 for FiproGuard Plus and $62 for Frontline Plus at Petco. All three contain S-methoprene which causes the fleas to lay sterile eggs. I was wondering what others on the forum thought about this.
Here is a link to some helpful information about all the products on the market. Table 3 shows that Revolution would be more dangerous than the 3 I have mentioned, due to LD50 (lethal dose to 50% of population.)

Kimberly, I guess I didn't quite answer your question. I have always used Frontline Plus and Heartguard on my dogs going back a very long time. I have never had a problem with either. They have also been effective. Never had fleas. I have only found dead ticks on their beds, or live ones on the top of their fur after we have been walking in the woods on our property.

Thanks Debbie, I will look into PetArmor. I just switched to FiproGuard due to it being more cost effective than Frontline, but PetArmor is even more so. Same medication, so should work.
