Bentley just started having this issue yesterday.   He was dry heaving a threw up a tiny bit of bile. He tried to throw up again, making a horrible noise, but nothing came out.  He was fine after that.  I went you for a little while and when I got home, he was excited to see me but started having a problem breathing.  I calmed him down, and he seemed fine but once in a while, he would breath in or out, I'm not sure which, and he'd make a funny noise.  We got up today, he was fine.  He ate, drank, etc.  My daughter just came home after being away for a couple of days and he literally started shaking and having trouble breathing.  He stopped and then it started again, each episode lasting maybe 10 seconds.  He calmed down and is fine.  I don't know if this is an emergency or if I can take him to the vet tomorrow.  It started after he threw up.  We were out Friday night at my friend's party, he just hung out but he did sneak under the bbq and try to lick something, and he's not used to that many people.  He was by my side the whole night so i don't believe he could have eaten anything bad.  He did get spooked by some fireworks as we were walking back to the car, but last night (the 4th) he was in the house and the noise didn't seem to bother him it all.  I am at a loss, and very worried.

Is he eating, drinking, peeing and pooping normally?

yes

I think you're fine waiting til tomorrow to talk to your vet, and the ER isn't necessary. I don't know what it might be, but it sounds like it's triggered by excitement. Try to keep him calm and quiet and watch him for any changes in behavior.

thank you

I would see if it occurs with more frequency over the next hour or two.  If it does, I would take him to the vet, if it stops, I would wait until tomorrow.  Could he have something stuck in his throat or palate.  My vet told me that she has treated dogs who have something, even a piece of twig stuck in their palate, and they sound like they are choking.  Just a thought.

I think that if that were the case though, it wouldn't only have happened when he became excited because a family member arrived home. I'd think there would also be some difficulty with eating or drinking.

This almost sounds like something our dog does sometimes. ..like a "reverse sneeze." Where he sounds like he is almost hyperventilating. ..we had asked or vet about it and they said what Karen said here, but they also mentioned it could be related to allergies -we think or pup has some seasonal allergy - type issues. I would say that if Bentley does it again, you might try to get a video of it to take with you to the vet.

How's Bentley doing today?

Hi, Ricki.  I took him to the vet this morning.  He has a slight irritation in his lungs and she said he has a very sensitive trachea (which is why we use a harness).  She said it was possible he inhaled something that irritated his lungs.  He checked out fine otherwise, so she put him on an antihistamine and an antibiotic, as a precaution agains an infection.  I appreciate your concern and thank everyone for their help!

I hope the meds help.

I hope he's feeling better soon. Thanks for the update.

Glad to hear he's getting some treatment! Hope he's doing better soon!!
