Buzz has been experiencing bad episodes of yeast infections. I just watched an awesome video on externally treating the yeast (like on paws, ears and body) and the vet recommends a diet that is lower in carbs, no sweet potatoes, rice, etc. i suppose more human grade??

Just wondering if research has already been done and a brand can be recommended. He is currently getting Taste of the Wild ( so grain free ) but I really need to switch.

Poor baby is just tortured by the itching and we are tortured by the stinkyness, lol.

Thanks much.

Wait, don't tell me, let me guess. Could this video have been one of Karen Becker's from the Mercola website?

If so, it's hokum. Hogwash.

I've always been fairly certain that Buzz's issues stem from inhalant/environmental/seasonal allergies and have nothing much to do with food. 90% of all allergies in dogs are of the inhalant variety. And this is the worst time of year for pollen allergies.

I'd get him off the TOTW simply because it's not a recommended brand and it has a lousy Omega 6:3 ratio. Omega fatty acids play a big role in helping with itching and inflammation from allergies.

I'd switch him to Orijen 6 Fish.

Has your vet confirmed that Buzz has yeast infections?

Donna, please read the following information through, and try to implement some of the suggestions  for Buzz. It can make a world of difference. In particular the antihistamines and fatty acids.

Yes...that was the video. I though a lot of it made sense so I will take bits and pieces of it I had been advised before to try the peroxide/vinegar rinse so cant hurt to try. I will try the Orijen 6 Fish I currently give them 3 pumps a day of Bonnie and Clyde Omega 3 Fish Oil too. Thank you.

It honestly doesn't make sense, from a physiological standpoint. :) If it did, we'd all have yeast infections, because 60% or more of most people's diets are carbohydrates.

He's itching because of an immune response to allergens. And the licking and chewing at himself is causing a moist dermatitis. Yeasts are always present on everyone's skin, dogs and people alike. Yet most of us aren't walking around scratching and having skin infections.

The info I provide here about allergies all comes from veterinary dermatology specialists. :)

I'd use human fish oil softgels rather than the pump stuff that's sold for dogs. It's better quality and usually less expensive.

My feeling about "it can't hurt to try" some of these anecdotal and "natural" remedies is that people allow a dog to continue to be uncomfortable or worse while they experiment with unproven treatments that have no clinical evidence of effectiveness, when they could be using a treatment that is known to be effective.

I agree with you completely Karen. No medical sense to this at all.

Oh, and even though dietary factors like rice, sweet potatoes, etc play no role in the itching or yeast infections, the Orijen food is extremely low in carbohydrates. :)
