I was wondering if anyone had heard of or given their doodle one of these as a chew/treat - Himalayan Corporation Ruff Roots Stump - found on Amazon. Katie does love a stick, but mean mom won't let her chew them up/drag them all over the house/eat them. She likes bullies and the himalayan yak chews, but I swear she loves nothing more than a stick. Possibly because I always take them away! I obviously don't want to give her anything that's bad for her or dangerous, so I am wondering if anyone has tried it?

Thanks! Stacy

There was a recall on the ruff roots not to long ago. Not sure how that has been resolved.

Personally I don't buy anything from the himalayan dog chew company and this recall just solidified that position. The consistency varies so much from Himalayan chew to Himalayan chew that they lost my trust in their manufacturing processes. Some of the chews are soft, some are hard as glass. Once Tenley (the heavier chewer) bit off a chunk that was so sharp and large I would bet hundreds of dollars would have led to a bowel perforation. So, I don't trust them at all. I know a lot of people swear by them, but they lost my trust pretty quickly there. Since they're not an essential part of their diet, not worth the risk in my mind.
ThA ms for your observations.
Here's a photo of the piece Tenley got off. It was as sharp as glass. This chew is also for 55lb+ dogs and he is 35lbs, so it's not like the chew was too "weak" for his size range.

A lot of people say "don't buy the dark ones" to avoid this problem.... but, they're producing the dark ones and they're on store shelves and people WILL buy them. That is the problem.

Doesn't it dissolve fairly quickly, though? I think the stomach acid would take care of any worries about a bowel perforation, it would never make it that far.

With the normal chews, I would think so. But these are really, really hard and sharp. I had to press pretty hard to make an indent with a metal screw.

I actually saved the chew (this was a few months back).... I'm going to look at it again tomorrow to see if I can get it to expand or dissolve. I'd be really surprised if this "puffed up" in the microwave like it's supposed to.... that's how hard it is.

I've had good luck with the dog chews, of course all dogs and people are different. I've never gotten one that I would consider soft. And while I think Katie is an exceptionally chewy chewer she seems to just gnaw on them until they're small enough that I throw them away. She seems to be a gnawer and not so much a swallower.

Yes, I'm lucky Tenley isn't a swallower too :)

I don't know how we all missed this recall.

Well, I guess that answers my question! Thanks for saving me 18.99 and the absolute heartache of a sick pet.

Our only experience was with the Himalayan chews. While they seemed good for awhile, on two separate occasions our older dood got a piece off that he chocked on, so I took them away. Wished they would have worked. Seems like it's hard to find good safe chew treats.

It is. The ones I like best, antlers and real beef bones, can apparently cause slab fractures of the teeth so some people are afraid to use them. Everything else is gone in 5 minutes.

Nylabone Durachews seem to be the longest lasting and safest at this point, but not all dogs like them.

Beef tracheas and tendons are safe and last longer than bullies in my experience.

JD can't have any beef products any more because of his IBD. I still give him antlers, because for us, the benefits are worth the risks. But that's a choice everyone has to weigh for themselves.

The nylabone chews are are awesome! I think we have the whole line :p. My favorite is the large Galileo. Which I call the toe crusher. If it hits your toes you will know it!
