The last few days Oscar has been having more eye discharge than usual in his left eye. He's always had excessive discharge since he was a pup, and even had his tear ducts flushed while he was under sedation during his neuter procedure at 6 months. That helped for about a week before they plugged up again. As he's matured he's had less discharge, but in the last few days I've noticed his left eye has been running more than usual. Last night I cleaned around that eye and saw the discharge was even running out the outer side of the eye and when I cleaned it I saw a growth on his lower lid (see pic). I do my own grooming and Oscar was groomed about 3-1/2 weeks ago. I never saw this at that time. If it were as large a tumor then I don't know how I could have missed it.

I'll be getting him in to see the vet at the first opportunity this week, but wonder if others here have had a similar experience with their doodle, and what the outcome was. I realize Oscar will probably need surgery to remove the tumor, and considering the growth rate of it, more likely sooner than later. Oh, and one other thing. Oscar has been vomiting bile in his crate at night. He always gets a late night snack of kibble, as he's prone to vomit on an empty stomach. It makes me wonder if this eye thing is somehow related to the upset stomach. Maybe just coincidence?

From what I've read, tumors on the eyelids are common in dogs and with surgical removal, the prognosis is usually very good. I don't know if the vomiting at night could be related.  Please let us know what your vet says.

Will do. Thanks Karen.

Ned has a 'clogged' tear duct on his lower lid that was cleaned out about a year ago.  I was told it would 'clog' again and it has.  It will need to be removed this time.  His looks whiter than yours does.  It does cause him to have 'gunk' in his eyes. Our old Springer had more of what yours looks like on his lid.  It didn't seem to bother him and didn't cause tearing or discharge.

Oscar and I just returned from the vet. He thinks its a stye. Oscar's been prescribed a steroid/antibiotic drop and warm compresses 3x a day. We'll go back for a recheck next week.

Thanks for your input!

I'm glad to hear this, much better than having to have surgery! Hope the meds and compresses do the trick!

Me too! I'm really hoping that's all this is. One positive is Oscar tolerates warm compresses really well (he almost fell asleep while I tended to him). After about 10 minutes he turned his head away, so I ended the treatment. First of many yet to come.

I forgot to add an update to the vomiting of bile at night. I upped the amount of kibble I give him late at night and for the past 2 nights he hasn't had any problems. The vet today suggested Oscar lose 4-5 lbs. as he's a bit hefty and the vet is concerned the extra weight could contribute to torn knee ligaments in the future. I'll be transitioning him to Fromm's Gold Coast weight management formula dry food. Wish me luck the transition goes smoothly! I realize these 2 issues don't relate directly to one another, but the increase of late night kibble (and subsequent reduction of his 2 daily meals) reminded me of the weight issue.

Hi Deb! Sorry I didn't see this earlier. Too late now, I was gonna say this is what we call a 'Chalazion' or 'Hordeolum' in the human Opth world. Same treatment. If it persists, it can likely be excised, but I'd do warm compress as often as you can. It's the better alternative.
