Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I took 3 yr old Josie, my doodle for her yearly check up to the vet, and brought Piper my 7 month old whoodle ( Wheaton terrier/ poodle) for a weight check. Josie has been on Acana light and fit and has lost 6 lbs she is now 51 lbs, My vet was very pleased with Josie's progress and would like her to lose another 5 lbs and she showed me to feel for the ribs and look for the curvey abdomen.
I asked her how long I should keep Piper who is 24 lbs, on the acana puppy and junior food. She said that if she keeps slim to leave her on until 12 months, but if it looks like she is putting on weight then switch her to an adult food. I mentioned that I was looking forward to putting them on the same dog food cause that would be easier. She said that I may never be able to do that. Piper is high energy and the weaton breed are prone to requiring a higher calorie diet and Josie with the 3/4 retriever in her is prone to low energy and easy to gain weight ( which she did)
I will keep them on their current food for a couple more months, but not sure what to switch Piper to when she is able to go to the adult food. I was thinking about switching her to the Orijen. I have heard so many good comments about it here. And the thought of less poops is very appealing with 2 dogs. Do you think I should switch her? And do you recommend a food that both of them can go on, or should I keep them on separate food. What should I put Josie on when she gets down to her ideal weight?

Why not go with one of the adult Acana formulas, and then both dogs can be on it. It's made by the same company as Orijen, as you probably know. You can monitor Josie's portions and even replace a small portion of the food with green beans (the famous green bean diet, lol) if she starts to gain back any weight. And it will be sufficient for Piper's energy requirements. I do want to mention though that I've known a few Wheatens who were overweight.

You can go with the Acana Regionals line, and then you can rotate formulas. The Classics line is also going to be redone soon, and there may be some options there as well.

The Singles line would also work for Josie, but not be the best food for Piper. It's lower in protein and calories.

I don't see why they can't eat the same food.  Josie needs a lower amount.  Look at the calorie count for Acana light and whatever other food you want to food Piper.  Make sure you feed Josie the correct amount to get the same calories as before.

We've fed Orijen and Acana and I didn't see a dramatic difference in the amount of poop so don't base your decision on that factor.

Thanks for getting back to me with your great suggestions. I'm glad you think that they will be fine in the same dog food, it will make things so much easier. I think I will keep Josie on the light and fit for one more bag and then switch her. I'll switch Piper after this bag to Acana, she will likely be around 8 1/2 months old by then. I think I will stay with the Acana then, Deb if you haven't noticed a difference in their poop size. I do like how Acana has a big variety of food.
I don't need to transition Piper to the Acana adult food do I?
I love the green bean diet, I have given it to Josie once in a while when she seems overly hungry and she gobbles it all up. It's like a treat for her.

No need to do a transition to the adult food for Piper.

Great, thanks Karen
