Hello!

Our Nola got spayed on Friday & we were sent home with the pain mess and advised to give Benadryl if she doesn't stay calm. My previous dog was fine after he was neutered and I assumed that she would be calm, cool & collected after all of this. I was 110% wrong. I have been trying the Benadryl over the weekend and it really doesn't do much, she will lay and relax somewhat but she is jumping on/off the couches, jumping when my fiancé is home no matter what our attempts are to stop it, and she keeps wanting to run her laps around the house like usual ("zoomies"). the vet said to crate her but I just feel bad doing that when I am home with her, especially since wearing the "cone of shame" is bad enough.
So my question is, they said they could give a mild sedative but it could make her drool, her eyes look different (glazed, etc), & could experience urinary incontinence, has anyone given their doodle sedative meds? I considered it but those side effects make me nervous so I am 50/50 on it & said I would call back in the afternoon if I decide to get them. I am just worried about her energy and all affecting her incision healing.
Any advice would be great....

We gave our doodle acepromazine after surgery and it helped calm her down. It's really an anti anxiety med, but it will really knock them out if you give too much. Mostly they just get sleepy.
Did you get it from the vet? I am not sure what the name is of what they would give her...
Yes, from the vet. We had it for our dog that was afraid of thunder. Good luck.
Yes, the vet gave Daphne a sedative to keep her calm because she was very active. It did make her look like a zombie dog so after two days I couldn't stand it. Of course then she did get the zoomies in the back yard. I had to keep her on a leash to keep her from running around the yard.
Sounds like our girl Enzo. After returning to the Vet numerous times to redo sutures...we finally opted for the sedative. We started out on a lower dose, just to see how she would react. We increased dosage once, just to keep her calm, but not knocked out. No drooling, no incontinence, no eye glazing.
Okay. Maybe I will try it... At least cut whatever dose they give her in half at first... We have until the 18th which is when her sutures come out. I feel bad having to give her something but I would feel worse to have to go through it again if she were to mess something up.
I tried tethering her to me, and it worked, but I couldn't do 24/7. She never chewed on her sutures...it was/is her very active rambunctious self! We went back 3 different times...with them gluing her shut, twice and re-suturing the tnird time. Staples was the next step and I did not want to put her under again, so, that's when we opted for the sedative.
I just got back from picking up the medicine. They said her incision is swollen due to over activity. :( I have to give her this med and crate her, even though it isn't what I want to do. I moved her pen into the living room so she is atleast with us and not separated completely. I never thought I would have to do this but they said that they figured we would need this for her since she is so energetic.

Thats exactly what they said about Daphne. The drugs will knock her out pretty well though so crating may not be necessary. Daphne just lay on top of a pillow next to me and slept.

How old is Nola? At what age are you all having your Doodles neutered?
We just had our puppy spayed in December. We tried to keep Penny quiet but it was impossible. We walked her on a leash to potty in the yard, but she still wanted to roughhouse with the other dogs, while she was indoors. We just kept her inside as much as possible and kept her from wrestling with the others. We kept her from jumping on the furniture. We didn't take her for a walk until the stitches were out. The vet didn't even suggest Benedryl for Penny. I'm not sure why. But Penny doesn't normally get the zoomies unless her brother comes over for a playdate. I guess compared to other puppies, ours is relatively calm. Her brother is "one wild and crazy" dog, though! :-)
