Yesterday Jade picked up something out of the grass while I was standing talking to my MIL. I heard a crunch sound and tried to wrestle it out of her mouth, but it was gone! I thought it was mulch and was hoping she dropped it.
Today she had an appt. for the vet's and she has vomited once in my car already, so I knew it was bound to happen again and I put towels down on the seat. Sure enough she did vomit, but when I looked back there was an adapter! My hubby was working on the outside antenna and she picked up and ate a coaxial cable adapter! It was about an inch long!
She is always picking up stuff outside and I always try to get it out. However, obviously it would have been very dangerous for her had she not vomited it up.

When I try to get anything away from her, she tries to run away. I know I should probably be a little more calm when I go to get her, but she's fast about swallowing it.

Jade is a super sweet pup and is learning quickly. I should probably work on drop it, but I haven't figured out how with her. With Gracie, she likes to fetch so as soon as she lets go, I say drop it and then throw. It follows over to other things. Any suggestions?

We learned to trade when training. Drops it, offer something better. Good girl!
Good idea. I would have to figure out a good Item to trade.
Yes, in this case, vomiting was a GOOD thing! My puppy, Penny, eats EVERYTHING she finds on the floor of our house. I take a few meds so I have to be super careful that I don't drop one on the floor 'cause she could and probably would find it. So far, that hasn't happened. What is it about a puppy eating stuff that isnt food?!? I know they teeth (teethe?) but that doesn't explain why EVERYTHING goes into the mouth. Glad all turned out OK. Our dog doesn't "drop it" but she does allow us to open her mouth and get whatever it is. When Penny plays fetch, we say "release"...if that's any help--it works fairly well.
I know! My husband dropped a pill this evening, I was like get it before she does!
Jade is so sweet with everything else, but when it's in her mouth, she's like a snapping turtle and won't let me open it. I wonder if it is because she came from a big litter? You know like she learned that if she didn't keep a tight hold then she would lose it to her siblings.
When I visited the litter, her sister picked up a kitty cat toy and wouldn't let go of it either. I was considering the sister, but I really wanted a calmer puppy this go around since Gracie gave me a run for my money. :)
So far so good. I'm seeing though there are different things to worry about with this one. Good thing our house is relatively clean and things are up off of the floor most of the time.

oh dear!  we have a dog that gets sicks on car rides, so I understand the vomit thing.  Good thing yours did is right!

from a pup we started training with 'drop' and 'leave' right away.

As Michele stated, we traded for better options. ie a treat. then we would even give back the toy he wanted to play with so he understood the word "drop".

As he aged and went thru his 'not listening to you' phase.  If he had something that I wanted, and he would not drop it.  I gave the 'sit' command. Calmly walk towards him and repeat the 'drop' command. And made sure to keep that position until he gave it up!  Follow thru is key to word enforcement.  (this can take a few minutes to battle the will)

The 'leave' command we did similarly.  Initially, he goes towards something he is not suppose to have (ie remote laying on couch), 'leave' command is given.  If pup moves away from remote, treat is handed to pup.  treat only given if he moves away on 'leave' command.

As he was a pup, if found chewing on paper or non dog toys, a sharp no was given, and then an appropriate chew toy was made available.

You might have to follow Jade around a bit to let her know what are appropriate toys or not.  Socks are dangerous and many have had to have surgery to remove.  And I have noticed as we age, sometimes they choose incorrect items to get our attention.  We are very mindful on this matter as rewarding negative behavior will be a thorn in your side! lol

You can always put your fingers on the backside of their mouth to get them to open.  It is like you are pushing in between their teeth. But be quick about your retrieval!!

These pups are fun loving and great learners!!  You can do this!!

Oh yeah. She's not out of my sight! She does listen to a gruff no better than Gracie did. I'm will work on drop it now with enticing treats and using her toys. The only time she has a strong grip on something is when she shouldn't have it! Lol
