Otis is 15 weeks and just started shedding out of the blue. Not a ton around the house but I see it on my clothes and by his butt is really short thick hair that I can pluck out in tufts. Is this normal or is this a sign he will shed? I can handle minimal shedding but I had a golden before and couldn't take it. Please let me know if your pup did this if it got better with time. Thanks!

It's pretty much the consensus that if they shed as puppies, they will shed as adults. Sometimes there is some temporary shedding when they go through the coat change, but Otis is awfully young for that.

I see that Otis is an F1. I sure hope your breeder didn't promise you a non-shedding dog. In fact, 70% of all F1 doodles do shed to some degree.

They said minimal to no shedding. I contacted like 25 people who had F1s from them and none of them have shedding dogs. That's why I'm so surprised. The breeder said I could bring him back but I don't want to do the last 7 weeks over again!

Your breeder misinformed you. I have an F1 and he sheds heavily, year round. And I'm not alone. Lots of people here have doodles that shed, even some of the higher generations.

When there are heavily shedding breeds like Goldens and Labs in the mix, nobody should be telling you that shedding will be "minimal to no shedding."

Nikki, if not shedding is a priority (nothing wrong with that), return the pup.  Perhaps a pure breed poodle that you groom like a doodle would be a better choice.

Penny is F1 and I suppose we are lucky, but she doesn't shed at all. After we brush her, there's a tiny bit of fuzz on the brush but I don't count that as it's such a tiny amount. But our other two girls (not Doodles) shed so we had lots of dog hair around the house which is impossible to keep clean 24/7. The dust bunnies (really hair bunnies) drives me crazy.

From Otis's picture he does favor the golden retriever straighter hair, and that seems to shed more. How much comes off him when you brush him? I have a non shedder that I have to brush his hair out of his coat or he mats, and another who sheds very little but  I get very small amounts of hair on a brush with her.

Well he hates being brushed but the other day I got 4 brush fills quickly. Today only one. Took him to groomer to see her thoughts and she only got a small combs worth. I guess you just never know because of all the coat changes. I've heard some shed puppy coats at this age and at 6-8 months. Ive don't so much work with him already and he's such a sweetie. I just don't want the shedding to be bad like my golden. Just at a loss.

One thing about some shedding, it seems the coat care may be easier than those that do not shed.  He is a doll!

Thanks for the positive spin!
Hi were in MI too. We are getting our doodle in June, your Otis is so cute. We haven't decided between an f1 or f1b yet, we love the straighter coat, but like you worry about the shed. Just wanted to say hello from another Michigan peep. You didn't by chance get your dog near the Saginaw area?
Hi!!! We got Otis from country middle doodles in Indiana. He's a mini so he'll be about 35 pounds max. I'm in Northville!
