Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hey:) I have posted in other groups but they have directed me here. I have an 8 week old goldendoodle named Gus. From the moment we brought him home he has been shedding an obscene amount. We're talking our clothes are COVERED in hair if he sits on us or if we pet him. I heard not even retriever pups shed that early on. Has anyone else's doodle done this? Also, I would love to know if anyone's pup looked like Gus as a baby and how they look now all grown up. We are so stumped on what he will end up looking like. Thanks for the feedback!

I agree that it's difficult to say whether or not he has furnishings from these pictures. It's possible, he doesn't have a clearly "open face" like some I've seen. His coat does look to be on the straighter side. Waves in the ears often accompany an open face and shedding, so that in itself isn't necessarily a good sign, lol.
I have an F1 Labradoodle who does shed as much as a Retriever, but I adopted him at 14 months so I have no idea when the shedding started. And he does have furnishings and the shaggy "doodle look", although his coat is on the straighter side.
I will say that if a young puppy is already shedding heavily, and it's not due to some health issue, which your vet would know, it's extremely unlikely that the shedding is going to stop. Sometimes the reverse happens; a puppy who didn;t shed starts shedding as an adult, but not the other way around.
We asked the lady we got him from and she said that all puppies lose their hair at this point and once that baby coat falls out he won't shed anymore...:/ mmhmmm. He seriously has the thickest coat I've ever seen on a puppy. He seems to almost be losing some of the curl on his head unless she gave us a different pup from the pictures she was sending us. Thanks for the response:)
Yes, in this picture, he definitely looks like he has the furnishings.
I can tell you that it is not true that "all puppies lose their hair at this point". Prior to Jack, I had several non-shedding purebred puppies, and not one of them ever shed, as puppies or as adults.
Yeah, I hadn't read that anywhere else so I know it's not the truth. Either way we will love him the same but I definitely hope his shedding doesn't continue to get worse. I would love a shaggy/wavy doodle!
Thank you! We love him already. He definitely looks a lot like the retriever pups. He looked like he had some furnishings at 6 weeks when she sent us pictures of him again but it almost seems like he has lost some of that curl on his head as well.
Yes! I've learned through experts on this site that the doodly indicators are on the nose & ears. The curlier the better) & I've also come to learn that non-shedding is very often a myth....The good news is that the shedding does taper off a bit once the baby gets past his "puppy" coat.
I have a feeling this is how ours will be as well! Your doodle is a cutie though:D Yay for less grooming!
My Gracie was/is much flatter coated... yours looks fleecy, which is really the coat I wanted. The breeder we got ours from said ours might be a mild shedder because she could pull a bit of hair from her rump... but nothing like you are describing. Even though ours is a sporty coat with no furnishing :( , she does not shed much... just a little. All this to say, from what I've read on the boards, even doodly doodles can shed a lot, and flatter coats may not.
You may want to check with your vet... but with older goldens (which I had before) they would "blow coat" seasonally with massive shedding.
