Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi everyone,
I am the owner of a 7 month old Mini Golden Doodle. Her name is Bella. I'm curious to hear the opinions and factual experiences with Neutering. I'd like to hear thoughts on what age should this be done as well as overall first hand experiences with this.
Thank you. Mike

I think that that would be the right age (7months) to get her fixed. There are a lot of different opinions on this subject, like what age to get it done at. If you search Doodle Kisses for this subject, there some discussions that might help:)
"Neutering" would apply to a male, lol. Bella will be spayed.
As Sam mentioned, there are a lot of discussions here about this topic. IMO, all pet dogs need to be spayed/neutered. In most cases, if you purchased your dog from a reputable breeder, there will be a spay/neuter clause in your purchase agreement which may also stipulate the age by which it must be done. In general, it seems safest to wait until the growth plates of the bones have closed, which varies with the size of the dog. In minis, that would usually be between 6-10 months of age.
Karen's response is probably the best answer. We had an XL breed and our vet said large breeds should be spayed around 2 and our 5 lb pomeranian was neutered right around 8 months. Some rescues and shelters do it very early as part of their rescue agreement; however, it is not the best thing to do healthwise.
Annabelle is a mini and she was spayed at 6 months. That is the earliest my vet would do it. I did have a spay clause in my contract. My breeder never checked up on me to make sure I did it though. My reason for doing it early was because mini's generally mature earlier than standards and I didn't want to deal with a dog in heat. Not only dealing with the mess, but I didn't want us to be attacked by male dogs on our potty walks.
What does your Vet have to say? My Vet suggested we neuter my Standard Doodle at 6 - 7 mos because there were some behavioral triggers that we were beginning to see. I know that typically it would be a little later than that. Your Vet knows your own dog...I would certainly want his/her opinion. My mini Australian Doodle was neutered when I got him at 10 weeks. There have been no adverse implications to date with that early neuter, although I believe at this point the data suggests that it is better to wait.
Our first was neutered before he left the breeder, as was the practice 8 years ago. With our second, female, the recommendations were to wait until after 6 months, and we did have our Bella spayed at 7.5 months. She also had an umbilical hernia and it was getting bigger so we didn't want to wait much longer.
It is done with a very small incision, just a few self dissolving stitches. I brought her home an hour after she woke up from anesthesia and recovered her at home. She was given a dose of pain med before she left, and enough pain meds for the following 5 days. I did not want her staying at the vets overnight since I didn't feel there was anything more they could do that I couldn't do in the comfort of her own home. Plus she had never been crated and I felt she'd be very uncomfortable in one.
She had no cone nor did she ever need one and she only acted as though she were uncomfortable the first 2 days so I gave her the pain meds around the clock. By the 3rd day she was acting as if nothing happened and the hardest part was keeping her from jumping and playing hard with her brother. I had him stay with my daughter the first 2 days so as not distract or bother her and let her rest.
Im sure your Bella will do absolutely fine!!!
I forgot to mention that the breeder spayed Bella before we got her too. (3 Bellas in one discussion!) I think she did all the puppies. She did it so nobody irresponsibly bred them, which I understand.
Myla was spayed before we brought her home at eight weeks. I hadn't researched it beforehand and at the time thought it was a great idea - now that I've learned more about it, I would have waited but with that said, we have not had any problems with Myla and she is now 4 1/2 years old. I would definitely talk to your vet about it.
My vet says ideally before their first heat. I have had mostly male dogs because the neutering is so much easier and always had it done very early. It is just snip, snip. But my friends in agility say it affects their bone development, so now I have a female puppy and did not get her spayed as a puppy. Talk to your vet, but I'll bet it is about time for Bella to see the doctor.
Good advice. That is exactly what I heard!
