Farley barks sometimes when he wants you to pay attention to him or play.  Does anyone else's puppy do this?  Someone mentioned to me that this could be showing aggression.

Yeti is notorious for this! I think it's just a puppy thing. I've brought it up to a couple people here before and it seems the consensus is puppy-ness more so than aggression

Thanks.  I wasn't concerned as I thought it was just a puppy thing until someone mentioned aggression to me.  My black lab did this as a puppy and he ended up being the best calm adult dog.

What a cute puppy! My Clooney (10 weeks) does that, too.

Spike still does this. And he will be three in December. They are just trying to get you to play with them. The only problem we have with spike is that his bark sounds really mean. It scares the heck out of some people. Makes me sad. And worried.

Boone is almost 11 weeks and he definitely uses his bark to get our attention if he thinks we're ignoring him. It's such a cute little puppy bark though...it's hard to be annoyed. The only time I don't like it is when I've told him "No" when he's doing something he shouldn't and he barks at me. Then it feels like we're having an argument and he's talking back, lol.

Yeti talks back sometimes too haha. I'll look at him and say "don't sass me mr." I have a feeling people would think I'm crazy if they heard how much I talk to yeti.

It completely depends on the situation. Lucky only barks when he wants something. Usually one or two barks. He does this when he wants to be let out of his crate first thing in the morning or when he wants another dog to engage in play. I don't think it is aggression.  My fiance's mom's dog does the same thing but in a more dominate way.  Her labradors bark at her non-stop when she has the toy. The dog also barks in defiance when she tells him to do something he doesn't want to do.  For instance, he gets too jumpy and she tells him to go to his crate and so he barks a few times and then she has to say it again and then he would go to his crate.  It is almost more like a defiance.  It is pretty funny to watch because he understands her and he barks back.  It is like a child talking back to his mom.  In this situation, it isn't aggression but I would say it is dominance.

Carter is 11 months, she mainly barks when she wants outside. Cash is 4 years, he barks when they play but never when he wants out. Both bark a lot and get extremely excited when someone comes in the house. Carter has this schrill type scream when she is scared. Carter also has this mumble she does daily first only for me and now to my husband, I say she talks, husband is slowly agreeing with me. LOL never a dull moment with the two of them.

I think the barking back is really cute.  It is like they know exactly what you are saying!

I think it's a puppy thing. Angus used to do this like crazy, but has gotten better as he's grown up. He's 2 now and occasionally barks when he wants attention for something. I've heard from our daycare ppl that this barking to play thing is a doodle-y behavior as well.

With Hurley it is situational.  When he wants me to find him, or play with him, or his toy is where he cannot get it he will bark.  That bark is different than the stranger beware bark or the food bark.   When we are eating he will go sit by my husband's chair and let out a bark if he is not given a tidbit.   When he does that begging, demanding bark, I send him to 'PLACE".   He goes to his doggie bed and stays there until I release him which is after we finish eating.  We started teaching him PLACE within a couple of weeks of his becoming the center of our lives.

My Cooper used to do that when he was younger. It would get so annoying at the dog park. He would bark and bark to a dog he wants to play with but he doesn't realize that his barking was actually driving them away. Lol. He is now over a year and a half and doesn't do it as often. He will bark but just a few times then he'll walk away when he realize the other dog doesn't want to play with him. He will bark once or twice at his BFF to get him to chase Cooper. I just think it's a way of him "talking" and getting his message across. Your dog will get better :)
