Tara received a bag of Odor Free, thin, Bully Sticks from Best Bully Sticks yesterday and there were bugs in the bag with the sticks. I spoke with customer service today and they said the bugs "probably got there during transit".  What???  I'm not sure if they meant the transit from the source to them or from them to me. I know I can't even get into the bag without scissors!  Anyhow, they are sending a replacement bag which I will be examining closely before opening. They also asked for the Lot Number so they will be doing some in-house investigation as well apparently.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about it if you do business with Best Bully Sticks. I have purchased bullies from them for years with no issues so it's not a common problem and I will continue to use their service but right now there may be an issue. So take a peek!!

Oh no!

If the bag was tightly sealed, I doubt the bugs got in there after they left Best Bully's facility. And if they got in between the source and them, it would indicate that they don't examine their products very well. I think we'll put a comment in the Food Group about this.

Or I guess it is possible they got into the product at their facility after it arrived from the source too. But they wouldn't want to tell me THAT! :)

I started to leave this comment in the FG but then thought more people would see it on the main page. Both places is a good idea.

I agree that they wouldn't want to admit the possibility that they have bugs in their facility, lol. And I think that's the most likely scenario.

I put a link to this discussion in the comments section of TFG. Do you think it should be a separate discussion there? Feel free to copy and post it there, doesn't hurt to have it in both places.

While we're at it, I highly recommend Lola and Sanchez brand whom I trust more than BBS. Prompt email responses and small business - very unlike BBS in personality I feel. Their prices seem more expensive but they list weights. In contrast to the very long lasting sticks I got from them my most recent bag from BBS had 4/12 super thin sticks with barely any "meat" (haha) inside. Zoe did not like the empty ones at all.

Anita, thanks for the tip on Lola and Sanchez. I'll check them out. I know what you mean about BBS's customer service. Typically, not that good although they acted quickly today regarding the bug situation. We recently switched from standard to thin sticks as Tara really prefers thin ones. The first bag of thins (last order) contained very nice sticks (all acceptable to Tara :) But this current bag, besides the bugs, has some flat looking and other strangely shaped sticks. I don't know if she would find them worthy of a chew or not.  Maybe the replacement bag will be better but I'm open to trying a new brand.

UGH!  I'm glad I don't do bully sticks!

I know, Nancy, as if it isn't bad enough having bully sticks arrive at your door, knowing what they are, but now they come with bugs too!!!

I don't get them either! Only because I know what they are (and now they come with free bugs:)-- YUCK!

Yes, there was no extra charge for the bugs! LOL

Well, I am not sure how to explain this.... But they are made of...http://https://www.bing.com/search?q=what+are+bully+sticks+made+of&...

It is the 3rd one down. From reading a lot of good things about them on dk, I would get them:) I am not sure if its like rawhide though:\

Good Luck with your new puppy!!!!

Bully sticks are "beef pizzle"; it's the bull's penis. ;)
They are not like rawhide; rawhide is the hide of the cattle, and it's not digestible. It can cause obstructions and other GI problems. Bully sticks are fully digestible.

For some dogs, they're good as safe chew objects, because there's no risk of chipping a tooth as there is with hard things like antlers or femurs. But for others, (mine included), they don't last long enough. And they can be pricey. JD can polish off a huge $30 bully stick in about 5 minutes. For others here, they last a day or two.

As long as you buy them from a reliable source (check the Food Group's recommended treat brands) and they are sourced and made in America, they are safe for most dogs. They do cause loose stools for some.

I find this interesting as I was wondering about Best Bully Sticks as well.  I have been buying from them for the past year and have never seen bugs an also agree that the bugs with the sealed bags, the bugs came from their facility.  I also think that sometimes as the phrase goes S%#T happens.  I once dined at a very fine restaurant and found a worm in my salad....Yuck!!! I noticed that not all of their pizzle products are marked "MADE IN USA".  I only buy the products that are marked that they are made in the USA so I assume not all of their products are made in the USA so it can be deceiving.  Personally, I know they don't last long but that is the only "chew" that I will give my dogs after Oliver broke one of his back molars from chewing a Nylar Bone, Antler or Marrow Bone.  Not only did Oliver have to go through surgery to have his tooth pulled, 2 weeks of soft food and nothing else in his mouth, it cost me $1000.00.  So I do buy bully sticks in large quantities.  I will have to check out Lola and Sanchez as well :)
