Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hello everyone,

I got my first doodle a year ago and I am so in love with her. She has been the best dog and best companion ever. I feel so close with her. She is my daughters baby though. I too am extremely close to her because I care for her during the day while my daughters at school. We fight over her at night because be both love her so much and want her with us. My breeder just had another litter with the same parents as Marley. I plan on getting one more doodle from them because I love everything about her and want one from the litter to myself. This will be the last litter from her parents so I want to jump at the chance of getting another. My thought is to get a male this time around as Marley sees better around Males. Any thoughts on issues having puppies from the same lines?? Thanks for your in site

There's absolutely no issue with getting a second dog from the same breeder or bloodlines as Marley, and getting a second dog of the opposite sex is a very good idea. However, you can be pretty sure that a second dog is going to be hanging out wherever Marley hangs out. If Marley is with your DD, the new dog is going to want to be hanging out with them too, so you may still not have a dog to yourself, lol.

Thanks for your response! Yes I do understand that possibility. Marley usually wants me lol. Think that's because I am the primary caregiver. I just hate giving her up at night but know that we got her for my daughter. My daughter is very much a home body and we felt she needed a companion. She has been the best thing for her! I always make sure she knows she's her dog. We also have labs which are with me all day so they are close to me as well but are primarily my son and husbands hunting dogs. They tournament hunt with them so I'm limited on how much I can baby them and dress them up Hehe. So yes just looking for one to call my own! My oldest kids will be moving out soon and taking their pets with them :( I love animals and have plenty of love for another. Glad to hear this won't be a problem!! I attached a picture of Marley and one of our labs

Your dogs are beautiful.  Go for another dog from this same breeder.  You won't be sorry.  We always have at least two dogs and they are great company for each other and great companions for you.

Thanks for your response! I look forward to my next fur baby :)
I got the male dog first, and then decided when he was 8 mos, to get a sister pup. They are 6 mos apart and share the same daddy poodle. Love them like crazy, but they are a lot of work for mom right now. I'm hoping it gets easier as they mature a bit.
Thanks for you comment!! I am up for the challenge! I have adult labs as well and all are through the potty training and chewing stages etc. I know puppies are a ton of work. Do you say a lot of work because they are so close in age? Or because doodles together can be a handful? Or maybe you just mean in general when having multiple animals.
Fozzie was potty trained completely. It was that he was so much bigger than Ruby, that we couldn't let them be alone in the same room. She catching up now, and about half his size or better, but they are brother and sister and close to a first heat. We waited to neuter Fozzie for development reasons. He will be a year old this week, and Ruby 6mos, so the vet is suggesting we do both at the same time. It's been a juggling act, managing them, and my teaching job. Ruby really needs the kitchen to potty train, but that's Fozzie's domain. We will put them together after they are fixed and that may solve a lot of problems.

Why couldn't they be alone in the same room ?  Did they play together and Fozzie didn't realize he could hurt Ruby just by being so much bigger ?

Teddy my Toy Doodle was only 3.5 pounds when I got him so I guess a larger dog playing rough could have been a problem if I had a second.  As it was, I didn't let him play with other dogs until he weighted closer to 5 pounds (3 months old or so).  This was at his Puppy Classes with only a few other dogs in a supervised environment.  Just started taking him to dog parks recently, he's up to 11 pounds now so I have less worries.

Desi (boy) and Cori (girl) are seven months apart. They are half siblings - same dad, different mom. They are awesome together!

I'm on my 1st dog and have had him for only 4 months so it will be a while before I add a 2nd.

However, I have given it some thought as I am thinking the 2 will keep one another company when I am out.  God Forbid they don't get along, however.

Someone mentioned to me that you don't want to wait TOO LONG to get a 2nd as older dogs sometimes won't welcome a younger member.  But as Teddy is only 5 1/2 months, I figured if I got a 2nd one in a year or two, he's still pretty young.

My sister's schnoodle is 8 years old and barely tolerates Teddy and other puppies.  Doesn't like them bothering him, playing, bouncing off him, sniffing him, etc.  So that's something I would probably want to avoid.

But Teddy -- at least right now -- is very sociable and playful and seems to get along well with 90%+ of the dogs he meets, including at dog parks.  So if I got another dog/Doodle, I think he'd be receptive.

What I would have to decide would be to get a Standard, Mini, or another Toy ?  Because in a few years, Teddy might be 15-20 pounds and a younger dog could be 3-4x as big !!  LOL

Yeah I have heard this can happen with older dogs. We have a lab that is 12, one that's 8 and another that is almost 3. Thank god they have all been very welcoming to each other. I probably wouldn't get another dog quite yet but this will be the last litter from my doodles parents and I really want another from these two. I'm actually the third family coming back for a second doodle from the same litter.
Our first doodle, Sedona, was an only. She was super attached to my husband and didn't even like it when he'd pay attention to other dogs - for instance at a social gathering. When Sedona passed away last December, we knew that this time around we'd want two and planned to get them about a year apart. Long story short, the situation presented us with our perfect dogs seven months apart. Just about the time Desi was emerging from the toughest part of puppyhood, along comes baby Cori. It's been a crazy year, but our two are great friends and are close enough in age that they'll have plenty of years to play, play, play!!!!
