There's absolutely no issue with getting a second dog from the same breeder or bloodlines as Marley, and getting a second dog of the opposite sex is a very good idea. However, you can be pretty sure that a second dog is going to be hanging out wherever Marley hangs out. If Marley is with your DD, the new dog is going to want to be hanging out with them too, so you may still not have a dog to yourself, lol.
Your dogs are beautiful. Go for another dog from this same breeder. You won't be sorry. We always have at least two dogs and they are great company for each other and great companions for you.
Why couldn't they be alone in the same room ? Did they play together and Fozzie didn't realize he could hurt Ruby just by being so much bigger ?
Teddy my Toy Doodle was only 3.5 pounds when I got him so I guess a larger dog playing rough could have been a problem if I had a second. As it was, I didn't let him play with other dogs until he weighted closer to 5 pounds (3 months old or so). This was at his Puppy Classes with only a few other dogs in a supervised environment. Just started taking him to dog parks recently, he's up to 11 pounds now so I have less worries.
I'm on my 1st dog and have had him for only 4 months so it will be a while before I add a 2nd.
However, I have given it some thought as I am thinking the 2 will keep one another company when I am out. God Forbid they don't get along, however.
Someone mentioned to me that you don't want to wait TOO LONG to get a 2nd as older dogs sometimes won't welcome a younger member. But as Teddy is only 5 1/2 months, I figured if I got a 2nd one in a year or two, he's still pretty young.
My sister's schnoodle is 8 years old and barely tolerates Teddy and other puppies. Doesn't like them bothering him, playing, bouncing off him, sniffing him, etc. So that's something I would probably want to avoid.
But Teddy -- at least right now -- is very sociable and playful and seems to get along well with 90%+ of the dogs he meets, including at dog parks. So if I got another dog/Doodle, I think he'd be receptive.
What I would have to decide would be to get a Standard, Mini, or another Toy ? Because in a few years, Teddy might be 15-20 pounds and a younger dog could be 3-4x as big !! LOL
