Too bad you can't list what you found about the relocated "breeding business" somewhere here. Not that I would ever buy over the internet, but a lot of people do.

Amy, unfortunately, this one family is just the tiniest tip of the iceberg. There are hundreds and hundreds of puppy mills in the U.S., and the same kind of cruelty goes on in all of them. And yet, people continue to buy puppies from online ad sites, despite widespread media reports about all this. We've been having these discussions here on DK going back to 2008. I just wish people would find this site before they buy a puppy, not afterwards.

Maybe we need federal or state licensing ?

Maybe I'm just naive, but if done right selling puppies is a pretty nice business.  You don't get rich but you make a nice living, right ?  So why not do it right ?  Wouldn't you expect someone going into this business to already love dogs ?  Why go crooked or even crimp-and-save a few $$$ if it ruins your reputation or even invites criminal charges ?

I dunno, maybe I'm just too nice.

The truth is, puppy millers do not love dogs, they think of dogs as livestock or "crops" that you raise to make a profit. Doing it right takes time and money. For people living in rural farm areas with no education or job skills, and at a time when the "family farm" has been put out of business by huge corporations, dog breeding is an easy way to make a living, and often the only way to feed a family. And the more dogs you have, the more money you make.

Doing it right also costs more than you might think.

Laws vary from state to state, and there are usually lobbyists from the "pet industry" fighting to block or defeat legislation that protects animals in the areas where they need it most, like Missouri and Pennsylvania. Take a look at the PIJAC website:

If done properly, careful home breeders who do not breed their dogs too frequently, have good vet care for mom and puppies, and truly socialize their litters find do make a serious amount of money.  It is not a not a replacement for even a decent paying part-time job.

My family was friends in the 50s,60s, and 70s with a nationally known and respected breeder of English Springer Spaniels. (Sally Gasow, Sallylyn's Kennels) Her husband was a vet - so "free" vet care.  The veterinary business supported her dog habit.

This is  distressing because so many well intentioned individuals seeking  puppies fall prey to these puppy mills; often buying a puppy is an impulsive decision and as we all know, reputable breeders can have extensive waiting lists and an impulsive buyer may be unwilling to wait.....so very sad.

I looked at this puppy miller's website and she had a no visit policy. Red flag there. Also, she claimed that her dogs were health tested but provided no further information on the site.

The no visit policy is a red flag. She also alluded to grooming and feeding them...I am going out on a limb here and saying she doesn't do that.

You wouldn't have to go too far out on that limb, lol. Those horrendous photos are proof of that.

This makes me ill. I have friends and friends of friends ask me to look at the website of a breeder they are thinking of using.  I  spend quite a bit of time looking over the website, google earth the address, then point out all the red flags - they are invariably puppy mill breeders.  And then, they either purchase from that puppy mill anyway or move on to a worse one, citing the bargain price or a friend's dog.  I wish they wouldn't even ask if they aren't going to take my findings into account.

If you want a puppy mill dog and a bargain purchase price, just go to a shelter - that's where so many end up.

Whenever I read about an incident like this, it makes me so sick!  I wish there was some way we could rid our society of animal cruelty!  Maybe the guilty party should be made to wear a sign around their neck that "I am one of the scum of the earth and I am cruel to animals!"

And live out in the open, chained to a tree with no relief from the elements!
