Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello All! I searched and searched to find a group like this in hopes you all can help me! I have a 6.5 month old F1 male goldendoodle named Lincoln. We got him at 8 weeks from the breeder who had him on Eukanuba. He was a little irregular so we switched him to Blue Buffalo around 3 months...which was disastrous. After weeks of diarrhea we tried switching him back to Eukanuba, it didn't go away. So we did the chicken and rice thing, the pumpkin, the probiotics, etc. NOTHING WORKS! Since then, I have tried him on Taste of the Wild (salmon) - still irregular. A few goldendoodle owners at the park swear by Fromm so for the past month I've had him on that, still...constant diarrhea. In between all of this we have had multiple vet appointment: stool samples, stomach x-ray, blood tests for giardia, antibiotics, Rx probiotics, you name it, we've tried it. At this point the vet wants him to be on a prescription diet for the rest of his lift which I was totally on-board for until I read on this site it doesn't really work? Everything came back negative from his tests. He's a super happy, playful, active puppy his stools are just terrible. I bought NutriSource on the recommendation for a limited protein from a few people but haven't tried it yet. I've had him on chicken and rice for a week to try and stabilize him but I'm so scared of getting feeding him something that will upset his stomach again. Any advice or suggestions are more than welcome!

I would order the Proviable today if you haven't already done that. In the meantime, you can give 2 tablespoons of plain unflavored nonfat yogurt 2-3x/day. I would not give any treats at all, and definitely no bully sticks for awhile. Use small pieces of plain boiled white meat chicken for training rewards. I would stay with the bland diet until you have had several days of normal stools. Then you can start to gradually introduce the Acana.
Food alone would not fix diarrhea from giardia, so if you want, you can hold off on having another fecal done. But if the diarrhea returns, have another fecal done, and again, ask for Panacur, NOT flagyl.
There isn't a doubt in my mind that he had diarrhea before he came home to you.
As I'm sure many smarter than I told you, Giardia is a bitch to diagnose. We got lucky -nailed it on first test. I'm sure your vet explained many tests are false neg. What probiotic did you try (and I'm sure you know it needs to be give at least 2 hrs after antibiotic). The group recommended a probiotic on amazon called PROVIABLE DC (https://www.amazon.com/Proviable-DC-Cats-Dogs-Capsules/dp/B001O3UE9... ). There are 80 caps -not 30 like the advert says. Bella had giardia- did 2 drugs-flagyl and the panacur. Had so much poop afterwords! So i didn't mess with food (even though I wanted to change bc it wasn't great but I kept it until the poop calmed). The Proviable helped within 2 days.Karen posted a stronger vs of Proviable-maybe read or contact her about it.
The giardia is only positive if they find the cysts- and as you know sometimes you can't find them-they are only around every few days. We just got lucky.
I am sure there are others here that know more-but good luck. ALSO I picked up all the poop and poured a clorine/h20 solution over where it was to kill parasite. NOW I understand you don't have the diagnosis. But I read an article that Giardia is MORE common in the winter than summer (sun kills it). Are any other puppies in your hood or play group that have the runs?
I don't know which probiotic you used- like I said did 7 days flagyl, 5 panacur -no change. My silly theory is if you don't add probiotics their GI system is a mess after the drugs-so it won't matter what food you give (and you need to change it so slowly) that you need a probiotic. BUT I'm a shrink, not a vet!
Good luck, this is a great group. It helped me to calm down just having people to give advice and tell me to hang in there.
DrKaren and Bella (no longer with the runs!)
Our friend's puppy had diarrhea for months. It took them three or four different rounds of tests to finally uncover the parasite.... You raise a really good point here!
Hello All! I just wanted to give an update on Lincoln. He's been on the Wellness Simple - Turkey and Potato food for about 5 days now and we are already seeing a huge improvement! He's not 100% better but each days his stool looks a little more normal. I can't thank you all enough for your suggestions and help. It's been a long road with this little guy and I HOPE we found the magic food for him. I will update in a week or two. THANKS AGAIN!!!!
I'm so glad to hear that, Alex. Are you using the VSL#3 as well?
We are not. As we have so much Rx probiotic left from the vet we are using that until it runs out. If he doesn't get 100% in the next week or two I will switch him to the VSL#3.
Even if things do get 100% great in the next week or two, I would continue to give a good probiotic for at least a month. You may not need the VSL#3 if the improvement is that great, but I would order Proviable DC online and use that when the Rx stuff runs out. A good strong colony of beneficial gut bacteria is essential for proper digestion and stool formation.
Karen & Jackdoodle .. Is there a recommended probiotic other than Proviable DC? We don't have it here in Canada and it's would take 2-3 weeks before I receive it from US. Thank you
Well, there are a couple of recommended probiotics, but I am not familiar with Canadian products. You want something with at least 5 billion CFUs per dose, and no added garbage.
You can't order it through Amazon?
https://www.amazon.ca/NutraMax-Proviable-Capsules-Cats-Count/dp/B00...
Yes I can order it but it won't be received before 2-3 weeks... and I need probiotics now. Where can I find the list of the recommended probiotics? I'll look and see if I can get other recommended brands quicker. Thank you so much
We don't really have a list posted anywhere. Can you get iFlora by Sedona Labs?
Maybe if you call Nutramax, they can tell you where Proviable is sold in your area. Some vets do carry it.
