I know I've seen random posts but wondering what the census was on this issue? Sassy has been vomiting small amounts off and on for the last several months but its usually consistent with being active?

Well last night she woke at 3am, drank water then proceeded to toss it all up within 5-10 minutes?? Clearly she wasn't active and her little kitty seemed concerned as well and was real anxious around her??

I was restless the rest of the night so got a late start this morning then googled it just out of curiosity and heartworm was the first thing listed! Ugh my heart dropped.

Momma bear freaked, rushed her to the vet but they were closing up so he sent us home with a chicken rice diet and an order for prilosec. He did say we may have to change her diet but they eat Orijen and Acana (can't do much better than that) and the issue doesnt happen with food just water???

Wondering if anyone else fell into the same description and what the outcome was. She does have anxiety issues and she's now five. With so many doodles some getting sick others passing at such young ages I'm working myself into an absolute wreck! She's got a hearty appetite, VERY active, all body functions are normal?? Just seems to be a water issue??????

I don't know where you are reading that it's a sign of heartworm; it's not listed as a symptom of HW on any science based website. The first thing that came up for me after a digestive issue was thyroid dysfunction.

It's also probably not water, but bile and/or other digestive juices.

I think you might ask your vet to run a full thyroid panel. You want the full panel, not just T3 or T4.

I don't want to worry you, but vomiting clear liquid after hard exercise and water consumption was the earliest symptom of JD's IBD.

Hmmm, and that's when she vomits most! Any tests for ibd??

Yes, but they are very expensive and invasive, and you're nowhere near that point yet. Let's not go there, lol.

Okay, one hurdle at a time. Someone on one of the FB sites mentioned switching to a single grain free protein?? We switch back and forth already from an Acana single protein to the Orijen original. Could that really make a difference do ya think? Her puking is off and on so wondering if there might be some truth to that??

Well, I mentioned on FB that it would be a good idea to try an LID formula with less fat, like Acana Singles, which might make a difference if this is related to some digestive issue.

But I really wouldn;t take advice from multiple people in multiple FB groups, lol.

Jolene, Kona has often drunk too much water and then regirgitated it right back out. We had a Golden years ago. His name was Duke but we often called him pukey dukey because he did this often. (This is when they have not been exercising) I hope Sassy is perfectly fine.
She's really high strung and rarely sits still, now that we've added a kitten those two are running all over the house. Hoping its nothing but her 3am puke hit me weird, maybe I was just overly tired?? I had that uneasy deep in the gut feeling which is never good! Thanks
It does 't sound like anything very serious nor anything you can diagnose based on just that symptom. See if the Prilosec helps and go from there. Sassy will pick up on your anxiety so try to wait it out without working yourself up.
Thanks, she's my high strung needy child and has enough anxiety for the whole house definitely don't need to add to it! Lol. I'm really hoping its nothing. Now that heartworm isn't at the top if my concern I feel a lot better.

Jolene, I'm sending hugs to you and Sassy. Thanks for posting here.  I can't follow on fb and this is a much better forum to seek informed advice  I don't have any medical background or knowledge to be able to offer any useful advice.  We use travel bowls for drinking which I think slows down how fast they can drink.  I know Charlie gulps and chokes when he drinks water and sometimes even dry heaves but never throws up.  When we got him this behavior really worried me, and it still causes me concern, but nothing else has happened so I accept that however he drinks causes this but nothing is truly wrong.  Sassy doing this as a new behavior must be very worrying.  Do you think it possible she drank too much and too fast?

Hi Jolene,

Was is true vomiting (with effort from the stomach) or was it regurgitation (where the water just kinda falls out)? This sounds more like the regurgitation issues we have with Lambeau as he can eat and drink at the same time, but then the water just falls out, but usually it happens after he has a bout of vomiting. The doctors are not super concerned about his regurgitation at this point, but it could be a sign of megaesophagus, so that is something you could ask your vet.

We switched to raised bowls, which we have heard might help with regurgitation and try not to let him run for a bit after eating or drinking. We are on a special diet for his vomiting now,  but we still have an issue with regurgitation about 1x per week. Famotidine (Pepcid) is what we were given for him.

Yes it was definitely preceded by gagging and choking of sorts which also followed for about 15 minutes?? Usually after play she drinks and I think it could just be regurgitating??  Kinda of a blah and the toy in her mouth is soaking wet??  She's been a little more on the needy side so maybe she is not feeling well??  Sure wish they could talk.
