I don't know where you are reading that it's a sign of heartworm; it's not listed as a symptom of HW on any science based website. The first thing that came up for me after a digestive issue was thyroid dysfunction.
It's also probably not water, but bile and/or other digestive juices.
I think you might ask your vet to run a full thyroid panel. You want the full panel, not just T3 or T4.
I don't want to worry you, but vomiting clear liquid after hard exercise and water consumption was the earliest symptom of JD's IBD.
Yes, but they are very expensive and invasive, and you're nowhere near that point yet. Let's not go there, lol.
Well, I mentioned on FB that it would be a good idea to try an LID formula with less fat, like Acana Singles, which might make a difference if this is related to some digestive issue.
But I really wouldn;t take advice from multiple people in multiple FB groups, lol.
Jolene, I'm sending hugs to you and Sassy. Thanks for posting here. I can't follow on fb and this is a much better forum to seek informed advice I don't have any medical background or knowledge to be able to offer any useful advice. We use travel bowls for drinking which I think slows down how fast they can drink. I know Charlie gulps and chokes when he drinks water and sometimes even dry heaves but never throws up. When we got him this behavior really worried me, and it still causes me concern, but nothing else has happened so I accept that however he drinks causes this but nothing is truly wrong. Sassy doing this as a new behavior must be very worrying. Do you think it possible she drank too much and too fast?
Hi Jolene,
Was is true vomiting (with effort from the stomach) or was it regurgitation (where the water just kinda falls out)? This sounds more like the regurgitation issues we have with Lambeau as he can eat and drink at the same time, but then the water just falls out, but usually it happens after he has a bout of vomiting. The doctors are not super concerned about his regurgitation at this point, but it could be a sign of megaesophagus, so that is something you could ask your vet.
We switched to raised bowls, which we have heard might help with regurgitation and try not to let him run for a bit after eating or drinking. We are on a special diet for his vomiting now, but we still have an issue with regurgitation about 1x per week. Famotidine (Pepcid) is what we were given for him.
Yes it was definitely preceded by gagging and choking of sorts which also followed for about 15 minutes?? Usually after play she drinks and I think it could just be regurgitating?? Kinda of a blah and the toy in her mouth is soaking wet?? She's been a little more on the needy side so maybe she is not feeling well?? Sure wish they could talk.
