We are going up to the Northwoods in Wisconsin with Yeti this weekend and I'm very worried about ticks. I've been hearing on the news for the last couple of weeks that this is supposed to be the worst year on record for ticks in Wisconsin. We give yeti nexguard on the 15th of each month. I was wondering if we could also put a flea and tick collar on him for extra protection. Would this be overkill? Is there such thing as overdosing on flea and tick medicine? I'm not sure how the flea and tick collars work we just thought it might be nice for a little added protection .

I think a flea and tick collar would be OK.

Annabelle's vet wouldn't put her on Sentinel and Nexgard together. She said the Sentinel had a flea egg killer in it and it would be too much with the Nexgard. But I know people whose vets are fine with the combination. I would at least get my vets opinion on it.  The park trail where we ride our bikes is covered in ticks. Annabelle is in a bike trailer, but it is still scary as she is out of it before and after the ride. Some poor dog the other day was laying on the sidewalk while his owner picked off dozens of ticks, just from going for a walk. The park is wooded, but the trail is paved.  I live in Michigan and it is really bad here. It was such a warm winter, they never went away. The vet was seeing ticks in January.

Omgosh that sounds like such a nightmare!!! Thank you so much! I think I will give Yeti's vet a call tomorrow to see what she says! I think my ultimate worry comes from never really experiencing a tick before in real life. I've seen 1 in person. I have never had to pick one off of myself let alone my sweet baby.

I just bought a Baltic amber collar for Charlie. They are supposed to be all natural flea/tick deterrent.  The people in my Dog with IMHA support group on Facebook swears by it.  You can get it on amazon.

Hi there- I have an IMHA doodle too.  How is your pup doing???  My Finn is staying gradually improving!!  What a rough stretch though!  The Ticks have been unbelievable here in Maine!!  Hope your Doodle is beating IMHA and doing well !!

Thanks! It's been 3 weeks since his second transfusion and his level has been dropping slowly. :( so we'll see how the next week or so goes, might have to go in for a third.  Glad Finn is improving!  How long does it take for him to start improving?  Charlie has been battling this for over 2 months now.  I've been told this year the ticks will be real bad, but with Charlie not well, we haven't been going hiking/camping/dog park at all, but I ordered the amber collar just in case (also because it's kinda pretty, it'll be like his bling! LOL).

I know that my vet recommended Nexguard along with a Seresto collar when we are on vacation in the woods.

I'm in Northen Wisconsin. I havent found any ticks on Jack yet.
Ticks are common here.
When we go camping we definitely try to NOT get ticks on us but always wind up having that tick contest- whoever gets the most is "the tick"!
Eeek yes gross but somewhat inevitable...
:)
Just an FYI
Thank you so much!! I'm being such a worry wart haha

You're welcome!

They are horrid little things-eek

Better to be prepared :)

I would definitely comb his hair out completely when your trip is done. Enjoy the Beautiful Northwoods :)

Last July we spent a few days in SE Missouri - tick heaven - to a family reunion spending most of our time outdoors on a farm.  I was afraid of Picco having a reaction to any medications just because I've read so much about it but I know it's on the rare side.  I wanted to try a flea collar so if any reactions surfaced then I can remove the collar and hopefully shorten the time. Anyway, I used a Seresto collar and was very happy with it.  I put it on a couple weeks before we left on our trip and was impressed by finding that some ticks never bore in and one that did had died quickly. Every evening we did an inspection.

I'd bring a good pair of tweezers, and read about the best way to remove ticks before you leave for the weekend.

We live on Cape Cod, where ticks are a HUGE problem, and with NexGard, we have had no issues.
