Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi All - Bodi is our 4 year old mini labradoodle. Bodi has a history of being a picky eater, having stomach issues and on/off mushy poops forever. He has tried every food out there, been on/off metronizadole, Tylan powder, pepcid AC, probiotics etc. Recently a friend recommend i put him on a 6-8 week does of Baytril. Has anyone given this to their dog for stomach/intestinal issues? Did it help? I welcome your input. Thanks in advance!!!

I would not do this unless except under your vet's direction. Perhaps it is time to see a veterinary specialist.
I am not up on whether you have posted before, so on the probiotic issue, forgive me if I am repeating myself. Have you tried the human probiotic VSL #3. It is used by those who have more serious need of a probiotic. When we first got Charlie, he had parasites as well as re-homing related stress, socializion stress, and we took him on a huge trip. We treated the parasites, but he continued to have explosive diarrhea. He had metronizadole and so on. We finally tried the VSL#3 with him and kept it up for a month after the symptoms receded. It did the trick and he is now fine. Some dogs with more serious digestive issues stay on this routinely. You can get it at pharmacies- over the counter but you have to ask for it as it needs refrigeration. Be sure to ask for the capsules and not the sachet. Here is a link to VSL#3: https://vsl3.com/about-vsl/ Sometimes it is difficult to find but we purchased ours at the pharmacy in Target Stores. Again, if this is old news to you, I am sorry.
I see now that this is a recurring problem for Bodi. I think seeing a specialist will be cheaper in the long run. That is what we found when our Springer Spaniel had skin problems.
Any recommendations on how to find a specialist? We have also met with various vets - nobody seems to have any real answers. We live in Chicago. Thanks.
I think you're in luck in Chicago! Lots of specialists. I think Karen is in Chicago and has a GI vet for Jackdoodle. But I've had really good luck just googling for what I'm looking for. In my are the specialists are mostly affiliated with the Emergency Vet Hospitals. Even better if they are affiliated with the Veterinary schools. It's more likely that they are up to date on the cutting edge research that's going on. General vets are great for general things, but sometimes when you have a specialized problem you need a specialized vet.
Thanks for the recommendation. I will check out the antibiotic. Did your vet suggest the human probiotic VSL #3? I do think you are right we need to find a veterinary specialist - if you have any recommendations on how to find one that would be welcome as well. Thank you!
Karen suggested it for our Charlie also. Her specialist vet is the one who recommended it for her Jack. Karen is in the Chicago area, so I think she might have some recommendations for finding a specialist in your area. She is unavailable for the next few days.
Hi NS, just back online after surgery last Thursday. Here's the specialty clinic where all of Jack's specialists have practices. It's top notch: http://www.vetspecialty.com/
